We had the good fortune of connecting with Jakela Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jakela, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
At the beginning of the pandemic, I worked as a Speech Language Pathologist – Aide. My then coworkers and I were coming up with ideas about how we would decorate each month and what creative activities we would do with the children. One day, in particular, we were working on decorations to turn our space into a jungle and I was drawing a tree with lots of detail within the bark. One of my coworkers mentioned that the tree’s detail was so intricate that it made her think of a dress. I had not taken drawing seriously for years at this point and was finally considering putting more time and effort into it. She told me how great my drawing was and planted the seed to start my own business. She was also my first customer!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an artist, I take a lot of pride in what I do from beginning to end. I draw every picture by hand and am sure to offer the customer the opportunity to make suggestions as to what they would like to see added or removed from the final product. Also, I intentionally provide a handwritten note with every order thanking my customers for their support. I am most proud of my intentionality when it comes to the presentation of my work. Currently, I am not where I would like to be with my business; however, I am right where I need to be at this present moment. For me, this means that I am still learning and finding ways to better my craft. The journey is not and has not been easy up to this point as I work full time and am a wife and mother which are full-time jobs as well. I am learning to shift my focus when needed and take some time for myself to ensure that I don’t experience burnout while trying to do and be all that I can! I want the world to know that DivinelyChosenJKN is not just a name–it is a story, my story! Much like anyone else, I have experienced a lot that could have potentially caused me not to pursue more than what I could physically see before me. I was DIVINELY CHOSEN to use my gifts to help others in some way, shape, or form

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were in town, we would go to the movies, bowling, shopping, etc. One of my favorite places to shop is Hobby Lobby for obvious reasons, so we would definitely have to go there at least once during that week! We could also visit the river walk just to get some fresh air and be near the water. As for places to eat and/or drink, we could go to some of my favorite local restaurants which include Huey Magoo’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, The Velvet Elvis, and LongHorn Steakhouse.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I would like to thank God for blessing me with my gifts and talents. Second, I would like to thank my husband, Troy, and daughter, Jhakari, for believing in and supporting my vision/dream. Third, I would like to thank my family and friends for their support whether it be sharing a post or making a purchase. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank my life coach, Shontorial Gilbert with Walking in Purpose Coaching, LLC., for listening to me and offering words of encouragement time and time again.
