We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaida Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaida, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Growing up as a child, I was diagnosed with a skin disorder which caused dark spots on my lips and body. I was left with low self esteem and never felt like I was beautiful. The medications and chemical ointments that were prescribed did more harm than good to my body. After graduating college with a BS in Chemistry, I decided to create Poised Lips by Jai, a lip care company that creates safe, yet beautiful and unique products. Poised Lips by Jai embodies self love or what I like to call “soul love”. When you wear or use our products know that it was created with you in mind. To love your soul is to live your truth.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There has definitely been some rough patches in my chemistry career thus far. Honestly, I am not where I would want to be. However, I’m most proud of the way I’ve continued to move forward and kept a positive attitude. One major lesson I’ve learned along the way was to not rely on only one source of income becausecircumstances can change in an instant. I’ve also learned to pray continuously through m y struggles. I want the world to know that my brand will continue to grow, promote self love, and produce beautiful, customizable products. There are finished chapters in my book, but my story continues.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m definitely a foodie, so many of the spots I recommend will be restaurants. To start, I would go to Snooze for breakfast and mimosas; the vibe is definitely there. Breakfast Klub is another gem. It has an old shack feel to it and the fried chicken is top tier. If it’s crawfish season, hit up BBs Tex Orleans and for sure the Turkey Leg Hut. In addition to the restaurants, every so often there is a Vintage pop up shop that’s set up near downtown. It has old school music, break dancing, rap battles, vintage clothing, jewelry, etc. There’s also graffiti art, which is good for capturing the memories. It’s definitely a multi cultural environment. Discovery Green is also an area downtown where you can take photos by art sculptures, visit restaurants or simply just walk around in the area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout my family. I consider my closest friends family so they’re included as well. Without them I would have given up on my goals and dreams. My family has been in my corner since the beginning of this whole process. They have modeled my products, which was way out of their comfort zone, and helped me create content. My friends and family have listened to me when I’m frustrated, and continuously share my posts. Everything they do for me does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated!
