We had the good fortune of connecting with Jahnova and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jahnova, how do you think about risk?
I’ve always been a firm believer that with risk comes reward-if executed properly. There is a certain thrill in risk that I don’t receive with conformity. So far, my most important successes in life and my career are due to risk. I first moved away from home, across the country to pursue higher education at a private university I couldn’t afford. After connecting with amazing people and opportunities, I moved across the country (alone) with no savings to begin my career in the arts. At first, things were not very good. It was difficult but I believe that with time, discipline dedication and practice- anything is achievable. I even slept at the tattoo shop for a month because I had no money and was too prideful to sleep on anyone’s couch. I am the first person in my family to make a living off of art and I will be the first to have artwork worth millions. My family doesn’t take risks- they play things the safe way. My career excelled quickly because of focus and risk taking. Because I know exactly what I want, I can occasionally make risky decisions (with business) that can propel me forward or possibly set me back. I’d rather take a risk than not and potentially be stagnant. Honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without risk so I love it,.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am most excited about my art developing over time. I have a unique style that people love. This style is easy for me to execute so I love learning and applying new techniques that aren’t so easy for me. A lot of folks around me are educated in the arts so I take the time to educate myself and it shows. I got to where I am today professionally by networking, researching and practicing. Sometimes it feels like it was easy but looking back it’s been a long journey; there’s still so much more to go and that excites me. I’ve learned to be confident in myself and my work, always be myself and that there is no such thing as loyalty when it comes to business. I want people to know that this is only the very tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Jahnova brand. I’m so grateful for all of my supporters.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Atlanta! I think that the High Museum of Art is a true staple- it’s inspiring. The Botanical Gardens here are an amazing experience and change during the seasons. Little 5 Points is definitely a hot spot that I take visitors to walk around and shop. The culture and lifestyle here is dope.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out Miya Bailey for showing me how to be a strong artist through mentorship; and the City of Ink family for the immense support. Peter’s Street Station has opened so many doors for me. I am proud to be apart of the legacy.
