Meet Jahmekher Newton | Esthetician & Lash Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jahmekher Newton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jahmekher, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks, I believe is essential for growth in any aspect of your life, professional or personal. Its necessary for success. If you think about it, every goal you set forth & every choice that you make comes with a risk. When I began doing lash extensions back in 2019, I started out of my college dorm. I quit my job at five guys after doing lash extensions for only 3 weeks with no savings and no clientele. If I was afraid to take a risk and let the thoughts of fear and doubt consume me, I know I wouldn’t be where I am today. It is completely normal to be fearful, although If you’re ever wavered by the fear of failure imagine the fear of never trying.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I began doing lash extensions out of my college dorm in 2019, at that time my business name was “Flutter & Wink Mink Extensions”. Then I went to esthetician school and graduated in 2020. I then changed my business name to Omorfiá Esthetics. This journey of entrepreneurship has been nothing less than amazing and I wouldn’t trade it for the world, but it’s definitely not easy. I think a lot of young ladies wanting to be their own boss look at “instagram gurus” that make it look easy and think it’ll be a walk in the park. Being your own boss comes with so many obstacles and what I like to call “seasons”. Sometimes you have your up season where you’re booked and busy or selling out products and then you have your slow season. Last year of 2022 I hit the biggest obstacle in my business yet. I became pregnant with my son and was put on bed rest for 8 months due to being high risk. Because of this I had to close my suite and stop doing business. I was so used to making my own money and working that it took a huge toll on my mental health. I gave birth in 2022 of July and opened my suite in September of 2022. I thought when I came back that it would be just as it was before I left but boy was I wrong. Having to build back up my clientele after being gone for so long has been challenging and sometimes frustration but I know God is by my side.
For all of the entrepreneurs out there my advice would be to make sure you have systems in place so that if for any reason you are not able to operate your business, things will still get done and your business will still be functioning.
A lesson that I’ve learned is to take your business as seriously as you want others to take it. Don’t treat your business as a side hustle or something you so just to put extra money in your pocket. If this is something that you are serious about, treat it that way. If you don’t take yourself seriously how do you expect others to do so?
I want the world to know that I am a young black business woman & mother who loves the beauty industry and hopes to one day make an impact. I want to leave a legacy and be known for great things pertaining to beauty. I truly love helping women feel confident & more beautiful. I have accomplished a lot but I am no where close to being finished. I’m working on building a multimillion dollar beauty brand.
Something that I am the most proudest about is my ability to keep going, even when I feel overwhelmed or like everything is crumbling around me, I keep going.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love having fun and trying new things. I would take them somewhere fun and exciting like the Sandbox vr. I love a great brunch spot so I would also take them to Gritts & Eggs or Breakfast at Barney’s. For a fun night out I would take them to Evangadi which is one of my favorite lounges to go and listen to Caribbean & African Music.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my boyfriend as he’s played a major part in molding the business woman that I am today. We met my very first year of college. I was a nursing major who was unhappy and unsure of what it is I truly wanted out of life. He always pushed me to search deeper within myself and figure out what it is that I wanted to do. It’s because of his countless pep talks that I took a lash class, quit college that following semester & began my journey in Esthetics where my true passion was. He pushed me to bet on myself and to never be afraid. He’s been my biggest supporter from the beginning. To every woman reading this, my advice would be to get a man that values your goals just as much as he values his, a man that will push you to be better than the day before.
I would also like to shout out my mother, a true epitome of a boss lady. From the beginning she believed in me and pushed me to become better. I truly admire her for so many reasons, so for her to believe in my dreams meant more to me than anyone can possibly imagine. I know that I can always come to her for advice and she would never steer me wrong. Even when I feel like giving up she’s always there telling me to keep going! Mom, thank you for everything!
