We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaded and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaded, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Creation is power. Powerful enough to touch somebody’s soul through a piece of music. I was always compelled to play piano and compose pieces of music as a child, not knowing it was my way of expressing myself. When I felt like everything was falling apart, music took me out of the abyss. It has always been easy for me to express myself through music and melodies, it just made sense. The older I became, the more I wanted to help others who were having the same problems as me. The music I create should make people feel comfortable not being okay, and I want people to feel that comfort by listening to it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Music is a way for me to express myself and how I feel. Through that, I am going to help people, help them realize that it’s okay to not be okay; it’s either that or die trying. I am taking a sonically different path than the typical rap, pop, and r&b music, being hypnotic and trancelike. I intend to release a great deal of music quite soon, as my discography is still quite empty.

In terms of accomplishments, I am most proud of my growth, not just as an artist, but as a person. Getting to where I am now has been a struggle. My greatest enemy has never been a lack of support or resources; it has always been myself.

The greatest lesson I learned so far is to “just do it”. You can never fully prepare for something you have no experience with, and I have made the mistake of wasting time trying to prepare for failure. Failure is the root of all success, and if you don’t fail you will never win.

I want the world to know that “it’s ok not to be ok”. Mental health is important and it’s incorrect to feel as though it’s not. You aren’t alone; the world is a big place, and you aren’t the only one who feels the way you feel.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to this empty mall up at Pittsburgh Mills just to spend money without having hundreds of people around me. Go to the science center if you want a fun, crazy experience; I visit it since I was six and it doesn’t get old. The Strip District is one of the best places in the city for food or to experience different cultures – there is always something to discover there. There are often good performers and activities at Market Square if you want to go to live shows or if you want to attend an event, or attend the yearly Three Rivers Arts Festival.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It is important for me to acknowledge the support and encouragement I received from my parents. I would also like to shoutout Herman “Soy Sos” Pearl who taught me a lot about the science behind the music and the basics of mixing and mastering. Additionally, I’d like to thank all the artists I’ve worked with and Driving While Black Records for their continuous support over the years. They are the ones that keep me going and motivate me to be the best even when I feel like giving up.
