We had the good fortune of connecting with Jada Dukes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jada, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson that my business, LocsByJada has taught me is… I would have to say is to always remain authentic in any and everything that I do. I was so worried that people would not like my hairstyles. I would look up pictures of different hair stylist’s work and try to do exactly what they did. Not because I was just a fan of their work but because I was unsure of my own work and usure about the techniques I depended on to get the look I wanted to achieve. I felt as though my work was not good enough, so I tried to be like other hair stylists. One day I had an epiphany! I remember telling myself that this was not how I was going to run LocsByJada. If I was going to run a business, it has got to be real because everything I stand for is real. There could be 1 million people out here doing the same thing you are doing but whatever you do is unique because no one can do it exactly like you. Once I realized that there are a lot of hairstylists in Georgia, I started doing hair my way, unapologetically authentic and it worked for me.
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets LocsByJada apart from other hair stylists businesses is entirely everything, Lol. My looks do not look like anyone else’s, and I feel like that’s major. I feel like everything sets LocsByJada apart from others, the look, the stylist and right down to that warming feel I welcome all my clients with. I am really excited to be working on my website as we speak and new styles I will be offering going into the new year! It has been a long time coming so I cannot wait to get these new improvements up off the ground! To get where I am today, I had to allow my faith to cancel any fearful thoughts I had trying to scare me out of starting my own business. And trust me it was not easy, and it is not something that can happen overnight. What helped me overcome a lot of challenges was trying not to second guess myself or my work ethic and just put my trust in God that my idea’s will go as planned or just simply work out somehow somehow. Some lessons I have learned were patience and consistency are key. I remember reading something that said success does not happen overnight and that is very true but without consistency success will not happen at all. What I would like everyone to know is that anything is possible. I started LocsByJada with $10 and a whiteboard filled with my strategic plan. Whatever you want to do, do it! Always put your faith before fear always!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well considering I have been living in Georgia for 7 years now, should it be a crime that I have not really explored enough so I am not sure what the best places would be?! I would have to do more research before my friend(s) get here. I know there is an amusement center called, The Complex Sports and Entertainment that is exciting. We would check that out! If I had a best friend that was visiting, I would also take them into the heart of Atlanta and just explore the city. There is always something to do in Atlanta so there is no way we would get bored. After that I know we can find a nice restaurant or bar to grab something to eat and some drinks. I am a very social person when I want to be so after a day filled with activities and a full stomach, we would head to a lounge to end our night dancing to some good ole R&B!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out the beautiful designer whose custom crochet dress I am wearing in one of the pictures. She is so talented! Follow her business page on Instagram, @___.jella
I would also like to shout out any and everyone who supports my business, I appreciate all of you!
