We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacky Wong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacky, what inspires you?
Growing up, I use to watch a lot of YouTube videos and it has always caught my eye because it looked like a fun thing to do. A specific YouTuber I use to watch and looked up to was Ryan Higa. Watching him made me realize that being a content creator was what I wanted to do as I love to entertain people, make them laugh, and smile since there is so much sadness in the world. Therefore I plan on achieving these things through my content. He was also one of the few Asian content creators at the time and because of that, I wanted to make a name for the Asian community. Not only did watching content creators on YouTube inspire me but, my family is a big inspiration for me as well. I am a first-generation American with my mom coming from Taiwan and my dad from Malaysia. They both sacrificed a lot and worked very hard for me to have the opportunities that I have now. That’s why I want to work hard and achieve my dreams for my family and make them proud

.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When it comes to my YouTube videos, I get to be myself and express myself. Looking at my YouTube channel, I see it as my own business because I have to put a lot of time and effort into it. Being a YouTuber, there is a lot of competition which can be quite difficult to handle sometimes. With that being said, I will not change who I am to grow or do something I do not want to do in order to grow. With my channel, I represent my weird goofy self and upload the videos I want to upload. Me getting to where I am today was a long journey because being a content creator was not my first dream, football was, so I was never consistent with YouTube until now. Throughout this journey, there were times I want to give up but I chose not to because in life there are always going to be hardships when it comes to anything you want to achieve. I overcame this by no longer comparing myself to others because this is my story and journey and not theirs. I am doing what I love by entertaining people with my content.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to visit I would definitely have them meet my friends. My friend group and I always find something to do no matter what. It can vary from going to Atlantic Station to having an arm-wrestling contest at our local mall. When it comes to food, I love to eat. If I am ever in Atlanta, I always tend to go to Haddie B’s because they have amazing chicken. I also love going back to my hometown, Duluth, Georgia because in my opinion, they have the best Asian food in Georgia. Plus I love boba and one of my favorite shops is Sweet Hut. My friends and I love to go shopping and chill, whenever we’re together it’s always a good time. Also, I love Atlanta, just exploring the city is fun itself.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Someone I want to dedicate my shoutout to is Jeremy Lin. I look up to him and when Linsanity was happening I was just a kid at the time so looking back I realized how much he and his career has impacted me. Growing up playing football which had few Asians playing, I had to face a lot of adversity being stereotyped because of my race. Things like this would make me feel discouraged but when I found out Jeremy Lin faced a lot of the same adversity as me, it helped me push myself more to achieve my dreams.
