We had the good fortune of connecting with J Latoy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is me staying true to myself. Whatever obstacles I may face, (be it mental or emotionally), I always strive to stay true to myself and let that shine through.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a singer/songwriter it can be a struggle sometimes, but when something is innately your calling, you can’t escape it. I began recording and performing at the age of 14. I was still trying to figure myself out, but I knew that I was talented and that music was my life. Through many trials and errors (almost being signed to an independent label after winning a competition at my high school in 11th grade, being told I would be able to work with Bryant Reid, LA Reid’s brother, being told I had investors willing to sponsor my journey and that fall through), I managed to push through. After truly finding my voice and being confident in my style and who I am, doors began to open, J Latoy is all about light, love and inspiration! I began doing more and more shows, through networking, and I was even able to be heard by the one and only Wanya Morris of Boys II Men! I entered his Instagram singing competition in January 2021 and made it to the top 11 finalists! I can now say that I have a legend as my friend!
I’ve learned so much along my journey but the main take away for me is to stay consistent, be true to who you are, and to keep going!! You never know who’s watching and who’s depending on your gift !
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, I’m not much to go out like that. If my best friend were to come in town we’d probably go see a movie, go bowling, check out Atlantic Station for shopping and maybe a pool if it’s in the summer time. I love to eat (even as a vegan), so I can pretty much find food anywhere. Lol! It all depends on what experience they’re looking for. If they want the tourist attractions we could go to the Botanical Gardens, High Museum (especially for their Friday night jazz series) or the Aquarium. But like I said I’m pretty low key. I’d ask one of my music friends for what shows they’re playing at and go support live music. There’s nothing like a live show.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not have been where I am without my Father in Heaven first and foremost. But I would like to truly thank my family. My family has ALWAYS been supportive of me and my endeavors, specifically my sister Laurel. She saw my passion and helped to nurture and assist in any way that she could. I wouldn’t be as confident had it not been for her “bullying” me into singing whenever people asked, or volun-telling me to sing when I was younger. Lol! I’m truly grateful for her. My number one fan!
