We had the good fortune of connecting with Iyea Brandy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Iyea, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I am a mental health therapist and when the pandemic hit, I realized so many people were looking for therapist and having a hard time. At the same time I had a lot of therapist friends who were having hard time connecting their business. I decided to be a bridge and assist connecting people of color with competent culturally sensitive therapist. I also started coaching other therapist with their branding, marketing and business management.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career trajectory has a lot of twists and turns. I started out as an educator and entrepreneur. I taught middle school for several years and owned a day care center as well. I love entrepreneurship and have always owned a business. Some of the businesses I have owned over the years includes culinary (I was a personal chef and taught cooking classes). I coached and provided business strategy to other entrepreneurs on starting, growing and scaling their businesses. I have made millions and lost it all because of bad investments. I have been on social social service, almost evicted several times as I chased my entrepreneurial dreams and depressed at times. It has been a hard ride and the ride still continues to dip at times. I am very persistent person and believe in the power of my dreams to help make the world a better place. I use affirmations and mantras to help me through the rough patch. The lessons I have learned in business and life is the No are not bad, they are there to help you perfect your craft. Failure is your testament that you are following your dreams. I want the world to know that My Therapist is Black is on a mission to normalize mental health and wellness in communities of color. I want the world to know that I am on a personal mission to connect communities of color with culturally competent therapist to help them navigate and manage trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, addictions, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success in this business is due to all the therapist that attend trainings, engage in the FB groups and trust me to coach them. My fellow therapist trust me to support and mentor them. I am so grateful to My Therapist is Black family.
