We had the good fortune of connecting with Imari Sayas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Imari, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
So in 2017 I experienced hair loss from birth control, a side effect that effects so many women world wide. Though I loved hair extensions and seeing myself look completely “transformed”, it no longer felt the same because it was now a dependency. That’s when I decided that if I was going to wear hair extensions more often it should look completely natural. I started doing research and found hair textures that resembled my own. To save money, I did my own hair. At that point so many of my peers wanted to know how I “grew”’my hair so quickly and that’s when I decided to buy it in bulk and sell it to others.

What should our readers know about your business?
This year I really want to focus on creating hair growth formulas and promoting safer ways to wear hair extensions. Lace wigs are fun and easy, but unfortunately becoming a necessity and not a choice. It’s so easy to neglect your real hair when you find quick styles to cover it. Unlike most hair sellers that promote textures the opposite of our own, I refuse. What sets Zari Collection apart from others is our dedication to make sure you get realistic results. No one should know your hair is fake but you. I’ve learned that a lot of women are afraid of their hair. So many of us were not properly taught how to take care of it. It’s time to change that so my daughter and other children recognize self love. Being a mom is a full time job, try running a business and working at the same time. Pressure often haunts me but I remind myself to remain focused and never compare myself to others. It truly is the thief of joy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Right now I currently reside in a suburb outside of Detroit, However Atlanta is my second home. My mother is from Georgia. If your in Detroit, you have to check out one of our Coney Island spots. Downtown also went through a recent renovation so you can check out a few new bars as well. I also enjoy downtown Royal Oak. Great music and scenery. If your in Atlanta, there is this amazing restaurant called The Juicy Crab. Very good vibe, reasonable prices and great service. If your an animal person the zoo and aquarium is also nice. If your into thrill like myself then you must checkout Six Flags.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely would like to thank Chass Autumn she was my hair Instructor. I took her hair class in Atlanta and learned how to apply lace wigs correctly. I would also like to thank my parents and my sister who always remind me that I’m destined for greatness. Most importantly I would like to thank my daughter Zara. Her existence alone helps me strive to be the best me I can be.
