We had the good fortune of connecting with Huoy Tyng Yap and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Huoy Tyng, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My name is Huoy Tyng, Founder of EHT Lifestyle, a Personal Trainer certified by the American Council on Exercise, and an Autism Fitness Trainer (Level 2) with over 8 years of experience. I have worked with individuals, including those with special needs, and various companies to improve their mental and physical well-being. Currently, I am pursuing my Master’s in Exercise Science at Concordia University, Minnesota, to broaden my professional horizons and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those with special needs.

However, my life was a little different 8 years ago. I was a full-time technical manager at a multinational company, overseeing projects in the Southeast Asia region. During my time with the company, I had the opportunity to lead a team of chemists in creating business-to-business products. We worked in a competitive market, so it was crucial for us to always stay ahead by coming up with fresh ideas and solutions for our customers.

In the beginning, I excelled in a demanding corporate role that required long hours and constant dedication. However, balancing my job and family commitments started to take a toll on my health. Despite achieving financial success, I felt unhappy and needed a better balance in my life. After acknowledging the toll it took on my well-being and reevaluating my priorities, I gradually transitioned to a new career as a personal trainer and focused on rebuilding myself. Moving into a different industry allowed me to prioritize both my physical and emotional health while pursuing a fulfilling career path.

After everything that happened, my views on work-life balance have definitely shifted. I used to take vacations to escape the pressures of work, only to realize that these vacations often left me feeling more stressed than relaxed. It became evident that I may not have dedicated enough time to working on myself internally, making it difficult to fully enjoy my time away.

Over time, working with my mentor, Elango Thiyagu (Founder of ET Ideas – Business Incubator & author of “Wisdom of The Talking Bodhi Tree”), has helped me change my perceptions regarding work-life balance. He introduced me to the concept of SIEP, a groundbreaking framework presented by PhD candidate, Valsala Krishnan (read more here: https://www.diamondopen.com/journals/index.php/fba/article/view/505), that allowed me to view things from a different perspective, manage my emotions, and learn to balance the seven aspects of life: happiness, health, wealth, relationships, social life, education, and spiritual growth. With his guidance, I gradually regained control over my life and health.

For example, I have noticed a shift in my approach to vacations. I found that integrating some work activities while on holiday can actually enhance my overall experience. It allows me to stay engaged in a balanced and enjoyable way rather than feeling overwhelmed. I am now able to fully enjoy my time off.

I am still learning to adopt the SIEP lifestyle with guidance from my mentor, but this journey has opened my eyes to having a balanced lifestyle that revolves around my true desires and overall happiness. Discovering work-life balance has been an exciting journey thus far. I realized that it is not solely about strictly separating work from personal life but rather about finding a harmonious integration that fulfills my heart and helps me grow as an individual each day.

What should our readers know about your business?
EHT Lifestyle is a health and wellness company that specializes in creating healthy lifestyles. I work with individuals and companies through a holistic approach to address health issues, enabling them to live life to the fullest. EHT Lifestyle sets itself apart with a personalized and inclusive approach, serving a wide range of clients including fitness enthusiasts and individuals with special needs. The training programs are designed to be adaptable, ensuring that everyone can achieve their health goals regardless of their starting point. The foundation of our practice is built on the SIEP framework (developed by PhD candidate Valsala Krishnan), which emphasizes balancing seven aspects of life: happiness, health, wealth, relationships, social life, education, and spiritual growth. This uniquely designed approach guides individuals to create long-term wholesome wellness, balance, and happiness by transforming from within. One of the most rewarding aspects is observing the progress and development of my clients. From witnessing a non-verbal autistic child improve motor skills and communication through fitness training to assisting busy professionals in restoring physical health and mental clarity, these success stories fuel my dedication and commitment.

It was definitely not an easy journey. Transitioning from a corporate technical manager position to that of a personal trainer required a significant adjustment in both mindset and skill set. The initial challenges included building a client base from scratch, gaining credibility in a new industry, and continuously updating my knowledge to provide the best service. To overcome these challenges, Working with my mentor, Elango Thiyagu and Valsala Krishnan, played a crucial role in this transition. They guided me through the principles of the SIEP framework, helping me build my confidence, find balance in my own life, and develop a unique approach to supporting my clients.

One of the key lessons I have learned is the significance of holistic well-being. Physical health is deeply interconnected with mental and emotional health. Changing a habit pattern requires time. Many people expect quick results and focus only on fixing the symptoms rather than seeking solutions to heal the underlying issues. True transformation requires patience, consistency, and a willingness to address the root causes of health challenges.

EHT Lifestyle is more than just a personal training service; it is a movement towards inclusive, holistic health. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve their best self. My approach, grounded in the SIEP framework, aims to bring balance and fulfillment to all aspects of life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I highly recommend checking out some of the great public parks in the area, such as Ben Hill Strickland Sr. Memorial Park. These parks are not only beautiful but also offer a friendly community atmosphere and plenty of fun activities. You can enjoy the lovely surroundings, take a leisurely walk on the trails, and unwind in the landscaped areas. Plus, there are playgrounds and picnic spots for the whole family to enjoy. These parks are perfect for anyone looking to spend some time outdoors.
As for food, I suggest checking out Summits Wayside Tavern. They have delicious tacos, quesadillas, burgers, and more that are sure to delight your taste buds. It’s a great place to enjoy good food and have a great time with friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am sincerely thankful and deeply appreciative of the dedication and guidance provided by my mentors: Elango Thiyagu, the founder of ET Ideas and author of “Wisdom of the Talking Bodhi Tree” and Valsala Krishnan, the Founder of Globetrotter Consultancy, a culture-shaping consultant. They have committed a substantial amount of time and effort to assist me in understanding the SIEP lifestyle, empowering me to shape my own reality. Thank you, Elango and Valsala, for believing in me.

I also want to express my gratitude to the ET Ideas associates who have been incredibly supportive throughout my journey as an entrepreneur.
