We had the good fortune of connecting with Hoodoo Jim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hoodoo, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Augusta, GA. It’s a big city, but it’s really low energy, it reminds me of a small town. Living there was a drag to be honest. I knew I wanted something different. I was never content. Over time I realized the only way I would change my situation was to find a way out. It was hard, I lost a lot of friends during this process, but sometimes that’s a necessary part of growth.

I didn’t grow up with a lot of money. I was raised by a single mother. I’ve seen what it’s like to go without, so I have this fire in me. Me and the people I care about won’t go back to that. I want to enjoy everything that life has to offer!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Big question! What sets me apart? I love to do this. It’s the only thing I really have to offer, everything else is a waste of time. I have a hand in every part of everything I do: I make all of my instrumentals, I produce my tracks, I write and record myself in my home studio. Everything about the music I make is me, you won’t be able to find it anywhere else.

I’m most excited about the future! I’ve come this far and I’m just heating up. There’s so much more in the works. I am proud of how far I’ve come, it definitely was not easy. Getting this far was like pulling teeth. I’ve had to deal with spiteful people, deceit. I’ve had to learn a lot very quickly. Almost everyday I’m taking risks. But I’m having fun. You have to take the bad with the good, and the good is really good.

I want the world to know that every person is only one decision away from completely changing their life. You are in control. Keep going. Sometimes it takes a while for everyone else to catch up with your vision.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would have to go exploring! I like to dance. I’m living in NYC now. I got a couple spots I like. I’d probably show them some places like Quantum near Downtown Brooklyn. There’s this bar over there too called Barely Disfigured, it’s pretty popping, it used to be a brothel, they got a bed in there. I mostly stay more low key with the the things I do though. I like to go to house parties, kick backs, things like that. The House of Yes, is decent if you’re into that artsy shit or you’re on something. There’s plenty of things to do, but to be real, New York is a little uptight for me, I’ve been missing Atlanta lately.

One of my favorite places in the city actually is the Greenwood Cemetery. It’s beautiful, it’s a like a maze. So many flowers and sculptures, it’s easy to get lost there. A lot of famous people are buried there as well, like Pop Smoke and Basquiat.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A lot of people come to mind when you ask me this. But I have to give it to my guy, Steve Machida (@stevencablemachida), an artist I’ve worked with closely. He inspired me to start creating music initially, if it wasn’t for him, I may not have started when I did, or at all even. I’ve also got to give a special mention to my girl, Lucy Lautrec (@lucylautrec), she’s taken so many pictures of me and has been extremely supportive.
