We had the good fortune of connecting with Holloway and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Holloway, what makes you happy? Why?
Freedom, especially in the personal, creative, spiritual and psychological senses. I need to be able to move between art, film, music, learning, and doing absolutely nothing quite regularly. Growing up in a musical family and Montessori environments got me used to making creative and academic choices of my own since I started writing and reading. Art followed quickly after. So I lump all of these things together- my process suffers if I separate life and art too much. That lumping makes me happy because it helps me to forget what is technically “work” or “chores” and what is fun, creative, play, or resting time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’d say my work isn’t incredibly physically different from the work of other fine artists or filmmakers, but I focus more intensely on attempting to translate my spiritual experiences to others through different media- maybe more so than even “visionary” artists. In some ways it’s very easy because I’m making work about what I know- I know spirits well, I know the natural world and dreams very well. The hard part would be learning how to separate my work from “fantasy” since I’m not always “making things up.” I love high fantasy, but I want to make work about what is possible to experience in daily life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, I love the forest behind my home so I’d take a thermos of coffee and show them the land. I’m vegan, so I usually cook at home or splurge on some vegan Mellow Mushroom. I love downtown Decatur, and my usual haunts are Dancing Goats, Brick Store, Raging Burrito, or Victory. Decatur Cemetery is also really beautiful, so it’s nice to carry some coffee (or Jeni’s dairy free!) through there. If I want to stay out really late, I’ll usually head to Mary’s in EAV. Other than that, I’d probably entertain my guests with a pile of laserdiscs, records, or piddle on my guitar while we trade ghost stories.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad, Richard. He’s been my greatest mentor and legitimately the best dad I’ve ever known. I don’t think I’m even biased about that. And my whole family, living and resting, deserves credit for supporting me as an artist.
