We had the good fortune of connecting with BVS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi BVS, what are you inspired by?
Blacks vote smart was inspired by the spike of injustice and the protests that followed in 2020 during the lockdown. My friends and I wanted to fight back smart and we understood that most of the problems in our communities stems from who we vote into office.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Blacks Vote Smart is a social group ideated by three black millennial women, Hendricks,Tracie Cieara and Joy Young we realized that voting in our communities had become a guessing game to vote for the candidate who sounds Black or who’s simply a Democrat.
We realized that it was important for us and our peers to educate ourselves on candidates in the local election ballots. As a direct result of the times we are still in with racial unrest and systemic racism, we have a responsibility to no longer guess when voting, but to “vote smart.” Voting Smart at the local election level works toward changing legislation to fight against systemic racism.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Our group will often hold meetings and social events at Red phone booth,The gathering spot and Parlor.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to the members of Blacks Vote Smart.
