We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidi Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heidi, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
Maya Angelou’s quote “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better” has been a guiding force throughout both my professional and personal life for as long as I can remember. Having been in the casting field for over a decade a key thing for me has been to always be in a state of learning. Whether it be from a time I totally miscalculated or a time when I nailed it – the question has ultimately been…what did I learn and how can I apply this for a better outcome?

Throughout my career in both reality and scripted casting, the one consistent piece of advice I have received along the way is to always be in a state of advancement – which again leads right back to my favorite part of Angelou’s quote – when you know better, do better.

Over the years I have gained the best advice from my mentors. Therefore, whenever someone asks me what has been a game changer in your success – I advise them to find an amazing mentor(s) who believes in you and your ability to flourish in your career. Take note of how they navigate through the world – and curate how that would work in your life. Most importantly, ask questions! Once you put this into action you will begin to see career doors open for you. I credit my mentors – Casting Directors Jason Skweres and Sean Hetherington – for their guidance through the ever-changing landscape of working in the entertainment field.

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.” You will not only reap the benefits in your professional life, but your personal life will flourish as well.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a Casting Director of unscripted content for streaming, cable, and broadcast television. I started working in casting because I wanted to provide life-changing opportunities for people, especially women, and communities of color. Coming from a background in psychology, criminology, and the arts – I use all of my previous skills and a genuine love for helping others to cast the most compelling stories and people on a variety of shows.

I have cast popular reality series including Netflix’s The American BBQ Showdown and Dated & Related, HBO Max’s Craftopia, FOX’s Beat Shazam, The Cube, Ultimate Tag, and Hell’s Kitchen, HGTV’s Clipped!, Bravo’s Project Runway, Universal Kid’s American Ninja Warrior Junior, OWN’s Ready To Love, and Food Network’s Kid’s Baking Championship, Top Chef Junior and Worst Cooks In America, and many more.
I am committed to helping members of marginalized communities pursue their on-camera dreams. My passion for providing opportunities for undiscovered talent led me to create The Casting Vault, a networking page for industry professionals. I am also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
