We had the good fortune of connecting with Heart Maher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heart, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
When I see how excited my students get with their progress, it makes me happy.

As a yoga teacher, I teach my students to build strength and increase flexibility. Their progressions define me as a teacher. When I see their progress, it means I’m good at what I do and it can’t get better than that.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was born and raised in Thailand and English is my second language. I had a hard time with my enunciation. When I auditioned to get a teaching positions at the yoga studios at the beginning of my yoga career, I didn’t get hire because they said they couldn’t understand me.

Instead of giving up, I decided to seek help from a speech therapist. After 4 months and thousands of dollars spent, I quit the therapist and started auditioned again. Only this time, many studios hired me.

Since 2016, I’ve taught over 3,000 hrs of private, semi private and group classes. I had workshops, taught at events and yoga festival in my home country, Thailand. I’ve lead yoga retreats in Thailand and also another country. We went to the Galápagos Islands last year which everyone had a fantastic time and this year we will be going to Bocas del Toro, Panama in November. There are spots left so you can sign up to go rise and flow in paradise with me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As a yoga teacher I teach weird hours. I live in SC and I often go to NJ for private/group sessions and workshops. I also go out of the country to host a yoga retreat once a year although it’s not easy for my husband while I’m away from home. It’s not easy for me either but it’s a career and life I choose. I’m grateful for my husband for his support so I can continue doing what I love.
