We had the good fortune of connecting with Hayley Bookhammer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hayley, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I needed a creative release from my every day life. I’ve always been really into art; drawing, painting, ceramics, but never wanted to make a career of it. After working in restaurants for over 10 years, I needed something else. I had a dream that I was a wedding photographer one night and the next morning I went and bought my first camera. I love researching and perfecting my craft. This career allows me to be creative and spend more time with my daughter.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Becoming a photographer was not an easy feat. There is a lot of competition in this market, but it’s all about staying true to your style. People choose their photographers based on the type of editing and storytelling the photographer displays in their portfolio. I describe my style as moody, airy and vintage. I want my photos to tell a story. I don’t typically “pose” my clients, but instead give them prompts and capture the unique interactions.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them thrifting at Rag O’ Rama in Little Five Points. We would check out some of the incredible breweries like Monday Night Garage, have dinner at The Vortex and get the “Fat Elvis” (a burger with peanut butter, bacon and plantains, YUM!). We could go to Ponce City Market and hang out on the rooftop after dinner.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My fiancé, Tyler, has been nothing, but supportive during this entire process. He pushed me to follow my dreams and helps me every step of the way.
