We had the good fortune of connecting with Harriet Sims and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Harriet, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
The most important thing I’ve done as a parent in terms of the impacting my children is to have allowed them to be their authentic selves. Too often, we as parents, especially single parents, try to over compensate for the parent that isn’t as active & present in their lives. They’ve watched their mother struggle & exercise strong Faith in God by overcoming a terminal cancer, & even recently taking a bold leap of Faith moving her home based Salon Business into a Salon Suite after 25 years & even during a Pandemic. So for them, seeing is believing! Both of my young adult children are aspiring Entrepreneurs like me. They believe if they put God first & put their minds into achieving goals that they will succeed.. Therefore, seeing their mother live in authenticity has been the one thing that’s impacted my children’s lives the most.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others are the therapies I provide aloe steam treatment, aroma therapy, sound therapy, & i also hold a BS in Psychology & started my Masters study I’m Clinical Social Work in addition to my life’s experiences that have taught me to be compassionate to someone who may have experienced traumas like cancer, divorce, depression, heart disease, diabetes that can all impact ones hair & Scalp health. I want to impart in my clients just how valuable they are with or without hair.. I am relatable being that I’m a over 15 year conqueror of cancer, divorce & have had close Loved ones who have succumbed to these diseases.

I have been doing hair part time for 25 years because I was lead to believe that being a Professional Cosmetologist couldn’t be a lucrative Career that could sustain me & my children’s lives up until just before the Pandemic I took a leap of faith & decided to give it a shot & go full time in the Business. I’m so excited that I now finally see how I can even have a retirement plan thanks to Angelica Prather’s blueprint. Getting to this mindset was not easy but somehow stating the word of God & affirming his promises have helped me tremendously over come the challenges I’ve faced along the way. One of the lessons I’ve headed is to believe people when they show you who they are & don’t try to change anyone. Be authentic & make room for rest asking the way. I was blessed to have learned the art of Tai Chi during the cancer journey & it has also been a saving Grace for my entire body., mind, & spirit. And so the one thing I’d like the world to know about me is that I truly care about people & pray fervently for each client that sits in my chair & want to leave a legacy for my children & grandchildren. Both my daughter Princess & Grand baby London love being in the Salon with me. My daughter has been inspired & wants to learn everything about the Business to ensure generational wealth.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Two of my favorite place to go to in Atlanta are IKEA in Atlantic station where it’s near restaurants, shops & theatre but their restaurant is even good & Affordable. My other favorite spot is Trader Joe’s. I love their healthy snack options & produce. It is healthier to cook & prepare your own meals. I also love flowers so I’d take someone to the Botanical Gardens & I’m the evening to enjoy the light exhibit during this season..

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes there are People who I’d like to recognize for my successes. First, my children who are my biggest cheerleaders then My deceased Single, African American Mother of 6 girls who taught my sisters & I to have faith in God no matter what. To love & respect everyone. Especially each other. She made us hug & love on each other when we would have disagreements. Then my Business Coach, Angelica Prather CEO of “ Charge Your Worth Academy”. A dear Friend who is also a Business Strategist, Tajuana Taylor “Bootstraps Business” & a host of friends & family. I’ve been immensely blessed with an amazing support system even my church family. I’m very grateful & thankful. Thank you for the opportunity to share my story.
