We had the good fortune of connecting with Hanna Soderstrom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hanna, what do you attribute your success to?
Listening: The Key to Designing Homes That Tell Our Client’s Story
In the world of interior design, it might sound straightforward, but the most important factor behind the success of Home at Hand Interiors is listening to our clients—truly listening. It’s about understanding their stories and helping bring out what they love. Too often, designers impose their tastes and preferences, overshadowing the clients’ voices and ultimately, their homes. At Home at Hand Interiors, our approach is different. We believe that a home should reflect its owner’s personality, tastes, and cherished memories. The name Home at Hand signifies that everyone has a unique style at their fingertips; we just help bring it out. We create timeless homes by listening to what truly matters to our clients.
Understanding the Client’s Story
As we spend more time at home, often working remotely, it is crucial that our living spaces resonate with who we are. The things we have collected over time, the memories we have made, and the places we have been all contribute to the story of our homes. The most important factor behind Home at Hand Interiors’ success is not enforcing our own tastes but embracing our clients’ stories. It’s about discovering what they love and letting their homes reflect who they are. This approach involves setting trends aside and encouraging clients to look inward.
Capturing Memories in Design
When starting a project, I ask my clients to close their eyes and think of a place from their childhood that they loved or a memorable destination they visited. It could be their grandmother’s kitchen or a charming street corner in Paris. I ask them to describe the interior, the colors, and the feelings they experienced in that moment. This is where we begin, building the home’s interior with elements they already love. A home should not be a blank slate; it should tell a story and evoke a sense of self. We embrace our clients’ most treasured items, weaving them into the design to create a space that feels personal and meaningful.
Embracing Vintage and Sustainability
We embrace vintage for its environmental benefits and the instant soul it brings to a design. Unlike some designers who start from scratch, we build on the existing picture, adding touches to make a home come alive. This approach requires flexibility and time, but the result is immense client satisfaction and spaces that mirror their soul.
Making Your Home Your Favorite Place
Our goal is to make our clients’ home their favorite place. By listening to their story and understanding what they love, we create spaces that are not only beautiful but also deeply personal and meaningful. Our mission is to bring out unique styles and create a space that our clients will love for years to come.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My education in business and economics from Uppsala University in Sweden has been foundational to my career. Growing up in Scandinavia, I’ve naturally embraced the simplicity and elegance of Scandinavian design. This innate connection to my cultural heritage sets me apart in the design world, as I incorporate these principles into my work.
I originally came to the US to play soccer and stayed to pursue a career in marketing and product development. This journey provided me with invaluable skills in project organization and business management, which have been crucial in starting and running my own business. Many creative professionals struggle due to a lack of business skills, but my background gives me a unique advantage in seamlessly blending creativity with strategic project coordination.
My athletic discipline has instilled in me a strong work ethic and competitiveness, which drive me to excel in my profession. These qualities ensure that I not only generate innovative ideas but also effectively coordinate and implement projects to bring those ideas to life.
