We had the good fortune of connecting with HanaKyle Moranz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi HanaKyle, how do you define success?
I define success based on a few major factors. One is how I feel about what’s going on: am I happy with how my work is going? Am I excessively stressed or running all over town every day?
Success means I have time to enjoy non-work activities. Success means I can pay my rent, take care of my expenses, and have extra to do the activities that I find enjoyable, like travel and creative practices, and save some for retirement. Being raised by artists and coming up in a DIY/ punk community, I wasn’t raised to deify money.
Capitalism is inherent to this society that we live in; it’s easy to think that being a millionaire will solve all my problems, and while it might provide some solutions, I continue to view success as an amalgam of how I spend my time and how I feel about how I’m spending my time! I aim to do it all in moderation. I’ve worked hard to identify what is enough for me financially, along with anticipating my future needs, but trying not to get hung up on what might happen. I subscribe to the idea of a “thriving wage” (I don’t remember where I learned that or I’d give credit), and have adjusted my rates accordingly.
As a caregiver, as someone who has built my career on helping other people feel better, I have to be cognizant of my boundaries and my personal needs. I feel successful when I help someone, but I also feel successful when I’ve given it my best effort and maybe my work wasn’t the right solution for an individual. I try to maintain perspective, have grace with myself, and embrace imperfections while trying my best to contribute to more ease and less pain in the world.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The Body Remedy Method is the culmination and synthesis of all the modalities that I practice: massage, yoga therapy, personal training, and all the complementary therapies I’ve trained in as well. I primarily work with people with pain, because the medical system in the US often leaves people wanting (and needing) more care than their insurance will allot. My individual sessions involve a lot of dialogue, exploration, and listening to the body’s response, so we’re experimenting with techniques and making space for evaluation and response. Understanding how bodies function (and sometimes don’t) is integral to my work, and my deep curiosity and investigative skills set me apart from typical personal trainers! It can be hard to admit that I can’t solve everyone’s problems, but I have a vast toolbox to dive into with each new person I work with. Body Remedy Sessions are always guided by my clients’ goals, so along with developing capacity for movement, strength, and mobility, my clients learn about their bodies so that they understand why their knees respond the way they do when they go hiking (for example).
Since the fall of 2020, I’ve hosted a regular 45 minute session on Sunday evenings called ANCHORING, in which we breathe, stretch, do a little self massage, and anything else that is requested by participants! It’s free, because it’s important to me to offer financially accessible opportunities for self care. It’s simultaneous a nourishing respite and a grounding preparation for the week ahead. Join us! Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and my favorite neighborhood food is Chinese skewers from the 369 BBQ truck, and in close second, quesadillas and gorditas from Antojitos Mexicanos Deli. From my place, we can take the ferry to Governor’s Island and relax in nature and check out the art projects in the repurposed spaces there. As for big city life, we’ll go to the theater at least once, and in the summer there are so many free concerts; I hope there’d be someone we’re excited to see at Celebrate Brooklyn or Central Park Summerstage. When I go to the theater district I like to eat at Casellula Wine and Cheese Bar. Lastly, I’m a member of a community garden and we’d definitely host a garden party and invite friends to hang out and cook in the wood-fired pizza oven there! It’s my favorite part of summer!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m dedicating this to my inimitable friend Hadassah Damien, who runs Ride Free Fearless Money and has helped me myriad times over the years figure out how to cast off my scarcity mindset when it comes to running my business, and get organized so that I can know what I have. I would be remiss if I didn’t state my great appreciation for my partner and photographer, Zachary Schulman, who takes the best pics of me everywhere we go. I value his labor and support every day!
