We had the good fortune of connecting with Grace Zhang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Grace, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up, drawing was the best way I could express myself.
Many artists, including myself, tend to be introspective and introverted. We’re the ones who sat alone in school and doodled on our homework, or spent hours getting obsessed with a new animated show and collected fan art like Pokemon cards, (hypothetically speaking, of course).
And maybe others can be a bit dismissive about the stuff we get so excited about.
“It’s just a cartoon show, what’s the big deal?” But for us, it’s much more than that. The stories and characters we connect with, expressed through the incredible work of fellow artists, are contagious. Witnessing their passion and hard work come to life is inspiring.
Today, with the incredible animation and stories being produced, it’s impossible not to want to be a part of it all.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
To be honest, I think my art style is constantly changing.
I’ve been told I’m halfway decent with color, and I love using that element in my work to make usually “mundane” subjects interesting. Recently, I’ve been diving into plein air studies and working on an exciting personal project. My passion lies in color and mood, and I can’t wait to use my skill sets to help with someone else’s project, whether it’s an indie game creator or a trendy animation studio.
I’ve been fortunate enough to take part in student Capstones during my time at SCAD. I also had the amazing opportunity to work on a Sony Animation project, courtesy of Noah Catan, another SCAD grad, who contacted me to help out. Seeing our final work in the trailer was so cool, and I can’t wait to see the film in August.
The biggest takeaway from my artistic experiences? Staying humble and focusing on improvement. No one likes a showoff; genuine enthusiasm and a willingness to learn will go a long way.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve had some amazing people support me on my artistic journey:
My dad was the one who bought my very first drawing tablet. With it, I created some of the most awkward, middle school anime art you’ve ever seen.
My mom always encourages me to be bolder and more confident. She even drove all the way to Savannah just to celebrate my birthdays.
My sister, who begrudgingly listens to every single idea or animation rant I’ve ever had, is also the one I can always watch the cheesiest, goofiest movies with at midnight.
The friends I’ve made at SCAD continuously inspire me with their passion, creativity, and, most importantly, their kindness.
And my professors, who answered all my annoying emails and always pushed me to improve and work harder.
