We had the good fortune of connecting with GQ and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi GQ, how do you think about risk?
Risk is necessary for growth and success, however I believe in taking calculated risk. as Jay-z once said, ” I’m not afraid of dying, I’m afraid of not trying.” Embracing risks has been integral to my journey, echoing Nipsey Hussle’s wisdom. ‘The most important thing, number one, is you gotta get rid of doubt. if you have doubt in what you’re doing, it’s not gonna work.'” As a Ghanaian from the Bronx Tracey Towers who comes from humble beginnings risk taking has become the roadway to the success of my budding career. In 2016 I put up my first music showcase with my team ” The Rollers”, unsure of the outcome all I had to rely on was excellent decision making in picking artist, the funds to facilitate the event, and my undying belief in God. Saving money for the event after countless hours on the job to finance the event was a risk, betting on the artist I chose was a risk. After a successful event boy I’m I glad I made those decisions.
T.A.C (Take A Chance)
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart is my focus on building genuine relationships and understanding my unique value in any situation. I’m most thrilled when I witness artists receiving the recognition they deserve, whether it’s praise, accolades, or new opportunities stemming from events or media activations I’ve orchestrated for them. My journey to this point has been fueled by relentless consistency and a commitment to generating fresh, creative ideas. Despite setbacks, I maintain a forward-thinking mindset, continuously striving for improvement rather than dwelling on past failures. While it can be challenging to remain positive in the face of adversity, I’ve learned the importance of patience and allowing things to unfold naturally, thanks to the wisdom imparted by my good brother Eclass. My message to the world is simple: take a chance and bet on yourself because success and greatness are attainable through hard work and perseverance.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s all about balance, right? While it might seem like I’m constantly out and about, the truth is, I’m a bit of a homebody. After a long day of work or attending events, I find solace in the comfort of my own space. However, when friends come to visit, I’m always up for exploring some of the best spots in the city. We’d likely start with a delicious meal at Accra restaurant on Burnside or Lagos Lounge to savor some authentic African cuisine. Then, we might swing by Audiomack studios link up with Cree (Senior Artist Services Manager) to vibe to some tracks and perhaps even lay down a few of our own. If it’s a Friday night, catching a show at SOBs or experiencing the vibrant nightlife at Global Fusion Friday at Doux would be on the agenda. It’s all about creating memorable experiences with good company.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely, confidence and consistency are crucial elements, but the unwavering support from my community, family, and friends has been monumental in my journey. From mentors like Emm (Highbridge The Label Exec), who always drops gems of wisdom, to visionaries like Majorstage’s Evan Biss (Majorstage VP/Artist Relation) and The Ramos Twins, Marco & Miguel(Founders), who gave me the opportunity and entrusted me with roles like A&R Talent Buyer, booking headline acts, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside passionate individuals who share my dedication to highlighting emerging talent such as Papi Ojo, Prince Lucas, Timi Dre and Osá in the afrobeats community in New York. Shoutout to Afrofuture rising stars, Motion DJs, Home of afrobeats, and cut-different Tv for their invaluable contributions to the culture. Special recognition goes to Gabe P, CEO of On The Radar Radio, and his team for their tireless efforts in bridging the gap between Africa and the United States, amplifying artists like Kwesi Arthur, Stonebwoy, Oxlade, King Promise, Lojay, and many more on a global scale with their interviews and live performances. Together, we’ve not only showcased talent but also released records like “I Need To,” featuring Fadí which was On The Radar records first afrobeats record shoutout John Mackey & Fritz the record was also featured on Power105. Fadí who previously preformed her record “ABAN” which went viral in her homeland Niger further solidifying our commitment to propelling artists to the masses worldwide.
