We had the good fortune of connecting with Gilberto Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gilberto, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to provide immense value to others while having the flexibility to spend time with those that matter most to me, my family.

What should our readers know about your business?
Gilberto Herrera Enterprises is the mother company to a financial firm and a Marketing Company (soon to be Omny1 Marketing Solutions) that couples training and coaching with an all-in-one sales and marketing platform which allows businesses the ability to earn more money and streamline their business resulting in more time and financial freedom.

What I am most proud of is the success stories that have come out of the work that we do. Small business owners have the power to stand out and conquer their markets. They earn more and work less. They finally get to a live that is not tied to constant work and enjoy time, location and financial freedom.

I got here by being a lifelong learner. My career started in sales, which led to me working for the largest private marketing firm in the country at the time. I pivoted to becoming a real estate investor and thought I’d leave the industry completely but my previous clients still wanted to work with me so I had figure out how to help them on my own. The larger firms at the time only focused on one way of doing marketing and I learned that a lot of my clients needed marketing but didn’t have a brand strategy to go along with their marketing and they also didn’t have a system to predictably attract, convert and retain their customers. I took on the challenge to help businesses achieve this goal and was able to stand out in the process.

It was not easy and i failed a lot, but I overcame all challenges by focusing on continuous customer feedback. In the beginning, I was trying to be all things to all people, but when I focused on one type of client, created a strategy to serve them and them only and eliminated everything else that did not work, I started seeing success.

The biggest lesson that I learned along the way is to build a business as if one day someone is going to want to buy it from you. This allows you to create systems you manage vs being tied to it emotionally. No different than your major corporations. They do the same thing, the same way, each time.

What the word should know about me is that I am a product of an immigrant family, a single parent household and was an undocumented immigrant majority of my time in the United States. The odds were against me, and yet I am here today. Use my story as inspiration and motivation; but more importantly, fuel to achieve your wildest dreams.

Today, I do not just do business. I’m an actor in movies and highly sought out speaker. I serve on the board of several nonprofits and help them raise hundreds of thousands annually. Lastly, I work with Google through their Grow with Google program as Alabama’s Digital Coach. This program provides free training, tools and resources to business owners so they can grow their business online.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to Birmingham, Alabama and wanted to have a good time, we would start our day with breakfast in Woodlawn at Bayle’s Restaurant. They have the best cooked to order breakfast that I have had since my time in Birmingham, Alabama. After breakfast, we would take a tour of the Civil Rights Institute and 16th Baptist Church. Birmingham is filled with rich history and most of us aren’t aware of how far our nation has come. Once we leave there, we would go see my friend Chuy at the Louis Bar in the Pizitz Food Hall. He will ensure my friend gets the best cocktails in Birmingham. We will eat lunch at Yo Mama’s Cafe and later that evening we would bar hop on the south side of Birmingham and Downtown Birmingham. We would go to dinner at Michael’s next to the historic Regions Field, home of the Birmingham Barons, where Michael Jordan played baseball.

Birmingham is a foodie town with rich Civil Rights history so I’s want my friend experience a little bit of both.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To my late grandfather, Eduardo Coward. He raised me as a child in Panama City, Panama and planted the entrepreneurial seed in me as a child. He owned a successful paint business, land and racehorses. On the weekends, he would take me to his office with me and I would spend the day with him at work. Seeing him have total autonomy of his time and what it did for our family left a lifelong impression on me early on.
