We had the good fortune of connecting with Germaine Cato and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Germaine, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Hello I am from Atlanta, GA and growing up I did not know anyone that was involved in anything dealing with exotic animals. It was always said go to school so that you can get a good job! No one ever asked me what do you want to do with this passion that you have for animals. So this is why I am so passionate about sharing what I love and do with anyone that will listen.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My company is 8 Legged Scales and I do edutainment with reptiles , arachnids & amphibians. The thing that sets me apart is that I provide a live engaging and interactive experience and I offer a after school enrichment program that comes out to your school . I am so proud for actually starting my business and being able to give my kids access to something different. I get super excited when I get invited to career days and community events! I got to where I am today by being genuine and passionate about what I love. The hardest thing for me was learning the branding and marketing aspect of business. I have learned that having the right people on your team makes you stronger. I am the number one reptile edutainer and my goal is to educate and get people excited with these amazing animals!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I don’t really hang out much but we would have to grab something to eat at a spot called Just Brunch in Lawrenceville. I would most definitely have to take them to the Battery and catch a Braves game. Little Five Points and Ponce City Market would be somewhere that we would visit. We have to go out and hit the lake for some bass fishing so maybe Lake Lanier and Stone Mountain Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Let me give a shoutout to my parents because I would not be here without them. I must give a shoutout to Americorps and Hands on Atlanta for giving me the opportunity to work with the Atlanta Public Schools for two years while I was able to receive two Presidents Awards for service. I want to acknowledge my wife and kids for all of their help and support. Let me give a big thanks to all the nonprofit organizations , schools , camps and individuals that I have met along the way.
