We had the good fortune of connecting with Gerdy & Siani Bourdeau & Purdie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gerdy & Siani, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea started with Siani having a desire to build an app and jokingly mentioned it to Gerdy, to which she excitedly said “let’s do it!” With Gerdy being a hairstylist and Siani moving to a new city in search of new beauty professionals, we both agreed that there is a need for a platform to pose as a one stop shop for both the business owner and client.

We combined an at hand assistant for the business and robust search features for the client experience to create, ‘The Look”

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Look app is a merge between Instagram and Yelp. A central location for beauty and wellness professionals to increase revenue and clientele. Clients can search for a specific service based on location, leave reviews, book appointments, and many more.

We signed up for a bootcamp on how to build apps without code, which gave us the fundamental tools to begin building our app.

We’ve learned to be patient, ask for help and take breaks. While building our app we realized we would need to utilize some coding . Our knowledge with IT has been trial and error so we relied on great research skills through Google and YouTube University . Siani’s ability to understand formulas helps us navigate plug-ins in our application. We couldn’t have imagined overcoming these challenges without the assistance of our bootcamp mentors. We motivate each other. We dedicate three days a week to work on the app and set mental health days where we hop on a call to check in and talk life into each other. It’s okay to take a break!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As best friends who currently live in different cities we have been able to explore both Philadelphia, PA and Charlotte, NC. The amount of adventures we’ve had between the two cities is tremendous. In Philly you can take a plunge at iFly Indoor skydiving, do a city bar hop bike tour and see what the Fillmore Philly has in store. Some of the city favorites are U+ME+RNB and Drake night to get the ultimate sing-a-long concert experience! We enjoy some of Charlotte’s southern good eats in different areas of the city whether it be in Uptown, Southend, or Plaza Midwood you’re bound to find a gem. On the more adventurous side hit up the Whitewater Center to get some fun exercise and whitewater rafting. No matter what city we are in, we make it our playground with what they have to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to shoutout our family & friends for keeping us motivated as we continue the building process. Also, the mentors from Apps Without Code bootcamp for the fundamentals we needed to build the app.
