Meet Genea Morrow | Self Taught Artist & Creative Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Genea Morrow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Genea, what inspires you?
As an artist, I draw inspiration from everything. Whatever I can see, touch, smell, my sense are usually in overdrive. However, my biggest inspiration comes from seeing everyday people like you and me. The human body is unique to each individual. We all have a story to tell. I just tend to focus on the details of how we describe it in its most natural state… nude. I’m going to take this as an opportunity to praise the female form, every shade, size, and distinguishing attribute is worth being captured and showcased with beauty in the forefront. Each pose can convey a different story, the way light highlights certain body parts brings forth features often forgotten.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was always told nothing good in life comes easy… and I only semi agree! My art came about because of an obsessive thought about clouds, and by obsessive, I mean it’s the only thing I thought about for six months. After that, it was up to me to figure out if I was willing to take it far. The thought of doing something where the focal point isn’t art seems so far-fetched, which is insane since I’ve only been painting for a little over a year. My growth in the industry is fueled solely by my need to prove to myself that I can do this, no matter how late my passion may have hit me. The most important lesson I can part with in my story is that every person’s timeline is different. How you start, when you start, and what you do with your talent is solely up to you. You cannot succeed in copying someone else’s footprint. Be inspired by yes, but copying will leave you stagnant and unfulfilled. The start of my story will always center around my need to explore the battle between feminine and masculine energies within women. I don’t know how my story will end, but I hope my paintbrush is still in my hand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow, Atlanta is too big for questions like this! I like to support local artists, so I search for paint in sips in the area. I’m also a big fan of the Spectacular Black Girl Art Show, which originated in Atlanta. They hold two shows a year, and I believe the next one is on May 8!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Many people deserve recognition when it comes to my success story! I made it a point to surround myself with peers who excel in their careers and lives. I strive to learn from those doing what I deem better than me because it gives me the drive to level up! My sister Ashley is by far the biggest supporter of my art career. She reacts to each new painting as if it was better than the last and if I ever need business advice in and out of the art world, she somehow always carries the wisdom I need. As with any sister, she gives me enough headaches to work hard enough to get our names in the right places and for that, I’m forever grateful!
