We had the good fortune of connecting with Gen Swindle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gen, how do you think about risk?
RISK, a risk, really to me, that sounds like an opportunity. I’m not going to say like every time I have took a risk it came out for my immediate greater good, but it has built character and that’s priceless. With music and fashion you really can’t be afraid to take risk, like with everything being so over saturated rolling the dice might get u closer to that pot of gold. It’s about keeping your integrity, but willing to gamble the current for the future, you know?
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
if we could summarize my whole creative vibe in one word, I would say, ocean. the oceans are really my twins LOLOLLLOL. simple as the calm scenic unknown. I really try to relate to all walks with my art though whether it’s music or merchandise I want it to be digested as easily as water. at this early stage, with all my endeavors I feel like brand integrity and principles are most important when catering new crowds turning them into supporters. That’s what I feel sets me apart and helped me advance thus far. being a regular person, not chasing some larger than life persona or trying to be someone I’m not. my story has always been my story as I respect everyones time and mind; I just want mutual respect on mine.
I’m probably proudest of the pride in which my supporters and followers of the brand embrace my music and clothes.
I’m not gonna lie though, it took a lot to get where I am now and a lot of people didn’t get to see that or just heard bits a pieces of the story. perseverance is the only reason I am where I am today, I wish I was more consistent in the early days, but I wasn’t even mentally in the right head space. after bumping my head so many times, I really sat back and evaluated my situation and the only thing I didn’t do that I watched all my peers do is stay consistent in the arts. So, that’s really when and where I changed everything I would say in real life that was just like last March/April for real. I started rapping rapping like studio everyday 4-12 hours July 1,2022. I was already rapping and making merch at the spot but changing my environment helped me grow as an artist and reach the levels I felt presentable to the world. I literally rap’d from July to November 24th, thanksgiving/my birthday like I literally woke up in the studio didn’t leave until like 3/4pm no funny lolll. That type sacrifice and dedication is what it takes though. sometimes you gotta do something you never done.
Man, I learned so many lessons along the way lolollll we gotta do a whole separate interview for that, but in all reality the most common thing in my story and anyone successful story I can say is, never stop believing in YOURSELF. a lot of people stop BELIEVING IN THEMSELVES because of so many factors that don’t even matter. Or stop being themselves to be around a crowd that’s not even really with them, that’s detrimental to the dream and your mental health for real.
I’m going to be honest, music has made me the most transparent I have ever been in my life and I just want people to know that YOU CAN DO IT. no matter, what people say, no matter what they try to do to stop you, no matter if you have to do it alone… YOU CAN DO IT. I’ve been in risky situations since a kid; shot, prisoned, used, stabbed in my back, manipulated and every other thing; take that pain and make something beautiful. & 1 more thing.. my best work is yet to come 😉
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oooouuuu ok coollll… Look Atlanta really kinda burnt so let me get into full character. Also I’m very introvert so it would have to be one of my best best friends man long live my lil bro Greg. So if Lil Greg called me right now like, “where ya at skiii I’m in the A for a week, lets do it.” I would first ask him did he eat yet? Our first stop would be Magic City Dayshift for a quick lets say “Wednesday special” which is the baked chicken Mac and string beans. After we leave the kitchen window I’m walking straight to the bar ordering 2 Shirley temples and 2 Fiji waters. Chill in there watch sportscenter for about 20 minutes cause my people got get us in and out. Next we would probably go grab some Air Force ones from one of the little outskirt malls lolololll that’s the only place they be. By 7/8 we are on our way to the hawks game, cool calm we don’t even gotta get splinters we just gettin mode so we Harrahs/Delta club it grab some food drinks let the shorties smile at us. Slide out the game and it’s so much traffic on peachtree/marietta street and we really trying to check the vibe before we take it in the crib I’m a tell bro lets go in Rocksteady. I honestly never been in there but I stayed in the lofts next door and between that and blu seafood it be lit all night right there lol. First thing in the morning we right back outside probably grab some quick brunch breakfast type vibe at toast on Lenox. Slide out of toast stop thru Phipps plaza see what the stores got probably try and grab a little shirt or some just to throw on or have in the mix. Phipps just opened a Givenchy store so it’s really lit for real you can come a lot of different ways. Day time stop thru the studio, see if the vibes right maybe load a beat up do a song in about 40 minutes get out the studio, hit Antidote. Lolll I know I just walked thru Phipps before the studio but Antidote is an experience of its own, I suggest anyone in or visiting Atlanta to check out Antidote Style in Atlantic Station. Probably keep everything in the area and link some friends go to sandbox vr and puttshack. By that time I’m sure we will be mid-video/photoshoot. Content everywhere, everyday, all the time. Keep it real simple probably take it in the crib. Next morning it’s calm chic fil a delivery on the breakfast, gotta come thru chicken biscuit. I’m a be in sandy springs so I’m probably doing a early afternoon walk thru at Performa Atl soon as they open at 12 make some changes to my fit. By this time bro got be bugging me like everyone else that come out here for merch, so I would probably take a ride to the wholesaler for some blank hats from Superline Wholesale and some vinyl print from Aviva. At this point I just need blanks I can always make samples if I need to have them on hand. Everyday be work days for me so I don’t wanna start sounding like a party pooper but a lot of our free time when you come visit me is going to be either music studio or art studio or both lollll. It also just depends on the week that your visitor comes. All we do is shop and eat so it’s like this the lineup… Drip: Performa Atl, Antidote, Repeat, Givenchy, PatnMoon, and/or Phipps Plaza. Food: Magic City Kitchen, toast on Lenox, la parilla, oceanaire, steak market, Paschals, Busy Bee, Mr Everything, Popeyes West End, and like Wrap A Lot on the Southside must haves on the eats.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
