We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabrielle Gates and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabrielle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always loved baking, ever since I was a little girl. But to be honest, becoming a business owner was fueled by a few factors. During my academic career, and every job I’ve ever had, I baked as a hobby because I loved it & it was therapeutic. When I had my son, I realized how much I hated being away from him, I’d spend so many days at work wishing I was home instead & feeling like I was missing out on the most important thing to me. It was that feeling that fueled my decision making, My then-boyfriend, now-husband, was super supportive so I was able to quit my job when I felt like I couldn’t take it anymore, At that point, it was easy to naturally just fall into something I was already good at.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The older I get, the more I realize that there is so much more to learn. There’s always a new technique, recipe, method. I try to be as flexible with myself as possible.

I think it’s important to be willing to try, & part of that means being willing to fail. It’d be so much easier if every step was the way forward, but some lessons can only be learned through trial & error. Those are lessons I am willing to take.
I pride myself on creating everything from my own recipe book, recipes that have taken so much love & effort to come to. Showing my love & passion through my cake brings me joy.

I’m so proud of my work & how far I’ve come, while still always committed to being better. That’s what sets anyone appear, really.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To be honest, I’m a bit of a homebody. A night in with one of my favorite meals and a good movie is always what I prefer.. but here’s what I’d do – First things first, there are a few must-haves as far as restaurants. JT’s is amazing for any meal of the day (half chicken is my fave) & do not forget the drinks! Remington Tavern has delicious steak & live music. Left Bank is a gem with such a beautiful ambience.

Paint the Town is a pretty fun experience especially if you’re looking to unwind but get dressed for a night out. (So are my Cake & Sips!)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have quite a few people to thank for my successes. My husband and children for the motivation, love, and support however I need it.
Ms Jamye Smith who was the first person to teach me how to decorate cakes.
My repeat customers who have been with me & stuck with me from the start.. even when I was still learning so much.
My entrepreneur friends who are always a listening ear, & who have saved me time & again.
& I always give thanks to God for this gift.
