We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabriel Rockett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabriel, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because I can have my own freedom of range to be myself. During my younger years, I would express my creative thoughts through writing poems and short stories. I also joined theatre class in high school where we were allowed to control our own narrative. Although I had these passions of creativity, I could never figure out what career that would best suit me. Due to the constant reminder that I had to pursue a career that was not risky. So, I attended college to pursue a nursing career only to satisfy others. However, later down the line I felt unhappy and this career did not portray who I really was. I knew that being in a 9-5 job I would be limited to things I can say or do. I have an outspoken, outgoing, and spontaneous personality that can not be caged in. So, in 2019 I created my YouTube Channel in the mindset to relate to an audience that was going through similarities as myself. I found my voice and confidence through my channel. My personality can shine without being judged. I love that I can express myself through my audience. I can be as authentic as I want to be. I can expose my creativity through my videos. I can create my own content freely knowing that they are interested in what I have to say.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I created a Youtube Channel in 2019 starting out with 0 followers. I had an idea to become an influencer to young women that were ongoing struggles with embracing their natural hair.  At the time, there were so many women on YouTube that were natural hair influencers, which made it more of a procrastination to start my own channel. I thought no one would want to listen to yet another influencer with natural hair given advice. Although this may be true. There are millions of viewers on YouTube that gravitate to influencers that have similar characteristics as themselves. I had to build the confidence to learn this over time. I decided to put all my fears of self doubt aside. I posted my first video on April 14th, 2019 with 0 followers and 0 views. So as of 2022, I have gained 2,433 followers and 12,000 views on my first video. I received so many positive messages since then from people on how I inspired them to gain the confidence they were looking for to start their own adventures. I also had brands reach out to me to review their hair line on my channel. I may not have millions of subscribers as of yet. However, looking back at how far my channel has grown speaks volumes to me. Starting a channel with the same niche as other influencers was definitely challenging. Although, it was not easy gaining an audience and pushing out content weekly. I was determined that I wanted to become an influencer. So now there are over two thousand people that are interested in what I have to say and that’s what gives me the motivation to continue. Along the way I have learned to face my fears head on and not run from them. I also learned that there may be so many people that are doing similar things that you want to do. However, it should not deter you away from doing so because you never know where or how far that journey will take you. I am continuing to manifest my channel to grow to a bigger platform, I want the world to know that my name is Gabriel Rockett, known as MochaCurlss on Youtube, who is a natural hair influencer.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Atlanta, Georgia so of course there is always an activity going on in the city. First stop on the itinerary my friend and I would have already had reservations for a brunch stop at Garden Parc or Toast at Lenox. We love a good brunch and mimosas. I would take her to Atlantic station to grab an ice cream at Kilwins Atlantic station where we can walk around to catch up and talk. Afterwards, we would go to this restaurant/ lounge named BQE where we can have a couple drinks with music in the background to have a chilled vibe. I love to get out to have fun with my friends however, since I am a mother now I am more of a homebody.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love to recognize my boyfriend James Giko for giving me the confidence and push I needed to start my channel. He brought all of the equipment I needed to jumpstart my channel. Even on days when I am feeling discouraged he always reminds me of how far I have come. Sometimes, the little things that the people you love that are around you can give you the confidence you need to boost you in the right direction.
