We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabby Goodwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabby, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is a quote I came up with after a huge rejection: “N.O. is just an abbreviation for Next Opportunity.” I’ve heard little no’s, big no’s, tall no’s, short no’s… every kind of no you can think of, but I always have to remember no matter how much the no’s hurt, those no’s get me closer to a yes.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Confidence is a curly girls hair accessories solutions brand I started with my Mom Rozalynn when I was seven years old. We invented GaBBY Bows – the first and only anti-slip double-face double-snap barrette guaranteed to stay in girl’s hair until taken out – keeping her styles and confidence intact.

With our patented and sustainable barrettes and other girls’ hair accessories, Confidence makes hair styling easier and less frequent, saving families 75% on their barrette bills to remove stress and bond over beauty.

We have sold more than one million GaBBY Bows in all 50 U.S. states and 15 countries direct to consumer through our website, Amazon and other online platforms. Our products have 1,079 four or five star reviews.

We stand by the quality, durability and engineering of our signature GaBBY Bows so much that we offer to guarantee to replace any GaBBY Bow that slips from the hair with two. GaBBY Bows have two faces so the design is always visible, a center strip and strategically placed teeth and craters to sandwich hair for a triple hold.

While our hair accessory solutions save time, money and frustration, My children’s book about her entrepreneurial journey, keynote presentations and virtual hair care and self-love events inspire confidence and creativity. Through our Mommy and Me Entrepreneurship Academy, we have helped 50 girls in 16 states start their own businesses under our brand.

Our story has been featured on The Real, HSN, QVC, Aspire TV, NPR How I Built This and Today Show, and in Forbes, Inc., Kiplinger, Washington Post, Essence, AOL and Now This.

I was named the youngest ever South Carolina Young Entrepreneur of the Year, the 2018 Black Enterprise Teenpreneur of the Year, and 2022 US Small Business Administration Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the state of South Carolina. Confidence was named the 2016 SCORE Foundation Outstanding Diverse Business of the Year. Confidence is also a certified Minority Business Enterprise.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Mom deserves a shoutout for starting this business with me and continuing to work hard and encourage me to do the same.
