We had the good fortune of connecting with Filipa Babo Amaral and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Filipa Babo, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
My name is Filipa, i´m from Portugal, always lived in Lisbon. I´m a kindergarden teatcher, and i love what i do! I realy love to work with childreen i learn so much with them. In Portugal i work as a kindergarden teatcher for a big intitution Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, in Lisbon, Portugal. My work was with children in risk. And i loved it.

In 2010 i came to São Tomé e Príncipe to be a volunteer for 1 year in São Tomé. I came to work with needy communities, with children, in mé-zochi, Madalena e Ribeira Afonso in the south.
In 2010 i meet my husband and i decided to be in the island for the rest of my life! 🙂

After one year i decided to stay and started work for a few years in a private school in São Tomé, but i was only a employed and didin´t do what i wanted or believe. It was a pour school, with a very few resouces. So, i decided to don´t work more there.
So in 2019 i was in São Tomé with no job.
My husband give me strengh and courage to think about open my own spot, with my ideas, here in São Tomé.
I´m a mother of 2 kids, Gonçalo 8 years and Carolina 5 years.

So i decided to take the big step of thinking of opening Saídos da Casca_STP

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
First of all…. sorry for my written english… to many years without writing…

Saídos da Casca_STP i s a project with big ideas!
We want to change the way that they educate in the island.
In São Tomé we have lot of problematic issues, like de garbage and the street dogs. In our school e do a lot of recicling with the children to reduce the garbage of our beautiful island. We tried to educate the kids to respect the nature and all the living being.
Many people came congratulate us for our work sensitizing all our children! 🙂

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In the city you must go for a dinner in the Tété Restaurant, to taste the fish. Go to Diogo Vaz chocolate and taste de delicacies. You should visit Cláudio Corallo.
You have to go to the north side of the island, to Praia dos Tamarindos, to dive in the hot water. Next Lagoa Azul and Neves city. In the north you have Mucumbli Ponta Figo to visit and tha Sta Catarina Tunnel.
For the south you have the best beaches. You should have lunch in Mionga, a restaurant in São João de Angolares and spend 2 nigths in Praia Inhame to see the sea turtles come out of the egg!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
