We had the good fortune of connecting with Felicia Baxter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Felicia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my own business as a mechanism to protect my wages or earnings as a contract physician and to decrease legal exposure through my other business ventures,  electronic medical records installation, and creation, healthy vending, or short-lived MLM ventures with wine and India Hooks. But my business would become more significant to protect my intellectual property as I published my first book, Not My Family,  as I expanded the reach of my blog, podcast, TNFro Is Reading, and now screenwriting.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was interviewed for the Gator News in 2020, and much of what I intimated is still relevant to these questions. February 12, 2020—“Nothing in my life thus far has been normal. For the most part, I have been okay with that.”
I graduated from UF College of Medicine in 1997, but my journey after attending medical school and completing my residency has not been linear. It has been like that glass elevator in my favorite movie Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, up, down, sideways, frontways, downwards, and slantways. My first practice was as a Major in the US Air Force. I worked all over the country as a contract Pediatrician, learning about every electronic medical record until I assisted the CERNER Corporation in installing them. And then, as first an assistant Chief Medical Information Officer(CMIO) as the CMIO of a start-up, I started writing my fictionalized autobiography, Not My Family, and continued to expand my blog and online store. I started my Podcast, TNFro Is Reading, because I was working in Kentucky during the Chump years and needed the means to entertain and distract myself. And it would take a player-hating cousin from NY, that would push me to increase my views and downloads where I went from a measly 3000 downloads to 70K downloads talking about books and trash TV from a cranky middle age black woman’s perspective. My varied life experience shapes my views and allows me to create my own way forward.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Chattanooga-Pick up at CHA. Chill in Chattanooga with Food from Uncle Larry’s or Chatty’s in town. The art scene at Art Creation and the market outside of the Aquarium are amazing local places. We would then have to go to Nashville to enjoy the music scene, country/etc., and take out Hattie B’s Hot Chicken because there is a wait but is available online. Memphis is 4 hours away, and we would have to stay at least 2 nights to enjoy everything on Beale St, the African American Arts Museum, and tour Graceland, because why not before we go to Uncle Nearest and Jack Daniels Distillery’s on our way back to Chattanooga, to sleep and wake up in time for her flight back to Northern VA. Then plan on the next trip to enjoy a Love, and Hip Hop-inspired tour of Atlanta on her next vacation.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate everything to my mother, Dale Evans Baxter; my father, Clifton Robert Baxter, my grandmother Mary Eliza Smith, my sister Annetta Baxter, my aunts Melody Brown and Sandra Willie, and their children, and their children. Also, to that organic chemistry teacher, Dr. Gratz, my pre-med advisor who hated pre-med students, that said I should not waste my time applying to out-of-state schools, especially the University of Fl College of Medicine, because I would never get in. Bet applied, got in, full ride, and graduated. Thanks, dude, for the “player-haterism” that propelled me forward!
