Meet Fatima Sultan | Motion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Fatima Sultan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fatima, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
From a young age, I knew I had a deep passion for art—whether it was music, drawing, or performance art. It allowed me to express myself freely and provided a safe space to showcase my creativity. Both in my home country of Bahrain and during my studies in the United States, I’ve found the art communities to be vibrant and supportive. The energy and enthusiasm among artists were infectious and inspiring. I’ve always felt drawn to this lively atmosphere and have aspired to contribute to it in my own way.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is distinguished by the minimal use of elements and color, with a strong emphasis on order and alignment. Graphic design has been a strong influence in my creative journey and I love incorporating these principles into my motion design work.
My exploration of minimalism began during the quarantine days. I dedicated a sketchbook to purely black and red drawings, mainly abstract, focusing on creating clean and sleek visuals. This process deepened my interest in design and the creation of beautiful still images that could later be brought to life through motion. The process of aligning elements, organizing them, and adding unique touches excites and motivates me to keep going.
Courage and consistent practice have been essential in my creative journey. Before venturing into motion design, I had never used an Adobe program. Traditional art was my comfort zone, and programs like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and especially After Effects, seemed intimidating. However, once I started experimenting with these tools, I realized their potential. Every creation from then on sparked new ideas and inspired further exploration.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Yay! I was waiting to be asked that haha. Savannah is a lovely town and I usually walk everywhere which really helps in discovering new cafe spots and restaurants. If a friend was in town I’d take them to eat breakfast at Maple Street and dinner at E-Tang! Coffee would definitely have to be at Origin! And I’d have to dedicate a whole day at Forsyth Park:)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to first thank my parents and brothers for their constant support and encouragement. I also want to thank my friends, professors, and colleagues at SCAD; without them, I wouldn’t have been able to come this far in my journey. Finally, a special thanks to my friends and colleagues in the Motion Media Department whose passion and courage have been a constant source of inspiration for me! 🙂
