Meet Fatima Camara: Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Fatima Camara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fatima, what do you want your legacy to be?
Empowering the artisans that I work with is the core value of my brand. All designs from 10,000 Threads are handmade by local artisans. I want to be remembered as a black woman from Guinea, West Africa who contributed to the economical development of her country through something she was passionate about: Fashion.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My brand is 10.000 Threads. All our designs are exclusively produced in Guinea, West Africa by local artisans. We aim to empower our talented and hardworking artisans through fashion and philanthropy. I’m proud to be able to use the resources that my country has to offer in a positive light. I started brainstorming about my business in College during my senior year. I was given the opportunity to participate in a competitive educational program of 4 months for aspiring entrepreneurs called “The Hatch” in 2017 . Paired with my mentor Paul Hooker, former CEO of Sferra, I was able to refine my idea. After completing the program and moving the Atlanta, I launched my brand a year after graduating . My journey has had some up and downs of course. Entrepreneurship is not one of the easiest thing to pursue in the the world. My biggest challenge is maintaining my 9-5 job and my my business and having to juggle both. My ultimate goal is to be able to focus on my brand solely. The best way that I have found to overcome my challenges and keep moving forward is to stay consistent and patient. Consistency and patience have been the two most important virtues that I’ve had to develop during my journey. As a young entrepreneur with no experience, I was forced to do a lot of learning through trials and errors. Those trials and errors have thought me that success doesn’t happens overnight and it will take you a lot of tries. Last but not least, it’s important for aspiring entrepreneurs to be organized. For instance write down 3-5 goals weekly that you would like to accomplish. Keeping a notebook pertaining to my business only where I write my ideas, plans etc has helped me a lot. My purpose is that my brand leaves a legacy engrained in fashion and culture. It’s not just about fashion for me, it’s deeper than that. I feel like it’s my duty to use my passion in order to put my people in a position to win.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Atlanta, it’s always something to do. When my friends are in town I usually like to take them to 3 different places. Somewhere to relax, somewhere to have fun and somewhere to learn. My top 3 places would be: Divan because of their amazing lamb chops, Piedmont Park and the high museum of art.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my family in Guinea who have greatly assisted me through my journey. They make all my vision come to life despite all the hurdles. 10,000 Threads wouldn’t exist without them.
