We had the good fortune of connecting with Faith Wrighten and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Faith, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Freedom. Freedom to do what I want, how I wanted and when I wanted to do it. Being free to grow and focus more on myself, my passion and my son. The more I worked and became exposed to different rules from various employers…the more I wanted to go into business for myself. I was thinking to myself like “I shouldn’t have to ask anyone to take off for vacation, or find someone to switch with so I can go to my son’s game.” Ummm, no. I was tired of being restricted to fit the needs of others who didn’t even sometimes like me nor respected me, so starting my own business was my solution. At the time I started really working and I say it like that because I became a mom at 19, so technically when I started my adult years I was already a mom in the working field and from the time I started working as a single mom I began to miss out on a lot of things my son did…his first steps, his first words and as he got older I started to miss games, practices, so needless to say I had to settle for pictures and videos.
Honestly, my main goal is providing jobs for single/divorced moms. I look at it like this my son only gets one life, he turns an age only once so why miss it because I’m giving all of me to a job that I’m not happy with… it’s not worth it. I felt that way for all single/divorced moms …not just me. I feel that there should be jobs out there that offer flexibility for all women who have children. There should be jobs that we enjoy getting up and clocking into, jobs that we can fit our kids school schedule into, jobs that offer good pay and insurance benefits and jobs that will grant us that opportunity to show up for our kids award ceremonies or, field day! That’s what motivated me to start my own business I needed freedom and I also wanted to supply jobs for single/divorce moms that’ll help take care of their needs and allow them time to spend with their children.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our mission is to provide all employees/employers with quality scrubs that cater to the needs of both women and men in various professions. Whether or not you’re working physically on the floor, clinically at the front desk, in the gym or, running a daycare. Just by Faith wants to provide you with stylish, durable scrubs that’s been designed to FIT TOO FLOW for every occasion!
Just By Faith offers a wide range of scrubs that are affordable for every tax bracket. We understand that every household income doesn’t allow some to choose nice, comfortable scrub wear that they’d like to wear on a normal working day, so in that instance, we work hard with our manufacture to keep the scrubs at low cost for everyone. I chose this career because it opens up a wider realm for me to be creative. I can play with different styles, colors and learn different techniques to market my product or, make my product better. JBF allows me to use my creativity to spark the audience’s interest and I love doing it! I enjoy creating, maximizing the viewers interest and also, being different!
Just By Faith is not only a scrub line…it’s a movement! We proudly support and advocate for single/divorce moms who are struggling to find their niche in life while being a full-time parent. We’ve helped some single moms with getting gas for work, putting groceries in refrigerators and also buying clothes for children who are in need. At the beginning of starting this business I became mostly excited about inspiring single moms to step out on FAITH, live their dreams and soar! I’m always looking at self-made millionaire mamas, or just a millionaire mom of any group because that’s what inspires me to keep moving forward. That’s another thing that fuels my faith. Reading success stories, listening to their Instagram Lives or Podcasts helps me to keep focus on my goals because I’m seeing it happen. I’m inspired by FAITH stories that I can relate too and I can’t wait for my story to be the next FAITH story on the list inspiring another mama out there!
How I got to where I am today is by taking risk! Taking risk is my motto! My best friend and I always talk about how someone had to take a chance on us, whether it was a customers first time purchasing from JBF, or a client paying to get their face done from a learning MUA so why not take a chance on yourself? You know what drives you, you know your strengths and weaknesses and only you know what it’s going take to get you where you need/want to be, so why not go for it?
Taking risks have played a huge part in my personal life, career and business. I bought my first house at 21 with a $12/ hour salary and I actually went to that same job and made my own interview because the people weren’t calling me back. Yup, I had a sit down with the manager, told her I needed to work because I had a 6 month old at home that I needed to take care of. That’s when my career started. I ended up getting hired and that’s how I started my career in healthcare. Yes, my hourly pay wasn’t all that but no apartment would approve me so I was like…why not go for a house? Which I did and I got it!
Business? Oh my goodness, I’m always taking risks. Before I actually found my current manufacture I had tested out like two of them and I was losing money at the same time, so I started to feel a little discouraged but that didn’t stop me from taking a chance on this manufacture (which would be by 3rd time) and now we have “Just By Faith”.
Was it challenging? Yes! But, I overcame many challenges by FAITH! Faith, faith, faith and MORE FAITH! That is my biggest and only factor behind my success and how I overcome challenges. Faith in God, faith in myself and faith in the skills that God has given me to work with. Faith is how I’ve built and continue to build my brand everyday. God continuously gives me instructions and assignments that constantly summons me to use my faith because I honestly don’t know what to do sometimes. I really don’t. Especially when that pressure is heating up. At that point, I’ll just sit back, ask the Lord to give me a Word to fuel my faith. Challenges will come, the pressure will get heavier, but in the face of opposition…what will you do? Fail? That’s not an option for me. Give up? Then what? I’ll be right back on someone’s job and I didn’t want that. So, I got more creative in my thinking on how too market my brand and expand my business. I made a quality decision with myself that I wasn’t going to settle for where I am, what I see or, for what I think I can do. I matter, so I have to be specific in what I want. I only get one life and I want to enjoy every moment. That’s my goal…that’s what I want to do.
Along the way, I’ve learned too never settle. I’ve learn to not settle for anything less than God’s best in my personal life, career and business. I’ve learned to not accept unacceptable behavior because I need a paycheck and, I’ve learned to not accept jobs that aren’t accommodating for me because I need a paycheck. I’ve learned to always put myself and my happiness first because giving your whole self too somebody else’s dream, or business does nothing for you in the long run especially if you are out of the scope you’d like to be in.
The best advice I can give someone is to expand your thinking, your imagination, be creative and let God be GOD! Don’t settle for where you are, what you see or, what you think you can do. You matter. I matter, so I have to be specific in what I want. I only get one life and I want to enjoy every moment. That’s my goal…that’s what I want to do.
I want the world to know that I’m human just like everyone else. I have feelings, challenges and everything isn’t easy. Some of my biggest testing times were times I was losing out on money instead of gaining and I just wanted to give up and tell the Lord to give this assignment to someone else. There are times I have to encourage myself that I can be all that I want to be. Ever since I divorced and became a single mom I’ve been constantly rebuilding myself…trying to figure out who I am and what I want for me and my child. My story has a lot to do with who I am today. When my ex-husband left, he left me with nothing and I had a 6-month old to care for so there was a lot I had to put into perspective as far as how we were going to eat, where we were going to stay and how I was going to pay for it. From that day forward I never ever gave someone that much power to have control over me again, not even a job.
This journey is new for me so no I won’t get it right the first time but that won’t stop my willingness to learn and perfect my craft. I want to become better at everything I set my hands to and I genuinely want to help, aide and assist single/divorce moms to live their dreams!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend Yasmine and I love too travel and being that she already lives in Charleston, I couldn’t try to show her nothing she hasn’t already seen before. Traveling to Myrtle Beach would be our resort to visit and we’d most likely hit up every seafood restaurant there is down there. I’m not a big drinker, but Yas will find a spot to turn up and let loose! Calabash is one of my go to spots down there. I love pancakes so, I’m always looking for a good restaurant that sells nice hot pancakes so “National House of Pancakes” it is! For lunch “Original Benjamin’s Calabash Seafood” or “Captain George’s seafood” and dinner we’d close out with a nice wing spot. Places we’d visit is the beach, I’m a big shopper so we’d go to the mall down there. For activities, I’d take her to Myrtle Beach Safari because I’m a HUGE animal lover and that place allows us to see, feel, touch and love on all the animals.
I am blessed with 2 best friends so I can’t mention one without mentioning the other. Breya and I are really simple. A little back story on her she moved up here to Charleston from Miami so, since she’s here we’re always deciding on what to do with our kids because we absolutely have no life outside of them! Lol! We are typically always looking up kid-friendly trips or activities that we all can enjoy. Our week would would start off hitting up some of the best breakfast, lunch and dinner spots in Charleston, SC because of course we LOVE to eat! Breakfast would be at Page’s Okra and Grill, or Another Broken Egg in downtown Charleston. Lunch of course would be a nice pizza spot, Chinese or in Christopher’s and I case some type of Hibachi restaurant. Oh! There’s this great food place call the “The Kitchen LLC” that I’d take her to as well. Dinner would ultimately be Longhorn’s! Between us and our kids we can’t get enough of that place! Parmesan crusted chicken dinner or the Salmon dinner are my personal favorites. Activities would be the beach of course because her and her family our swimmers and my son and I are still learning so we just go to watch and learn plus, we love the water too!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ultimately, the Lord deserves all the credit! I’m telling you, every good thing that has come to me whether it’s personal or business its because of God! This has definitely been and still is a journey for me, but all Glory goes to God for sure!
I’ll dedicate this shoutout to my son Christopher as well. Since he’s came into my life he’s motivated me to be a better me. Raising him stretches me to become the BEST version of myself because if I fail…I feel like I’ve failed him. He needs to know that dreams are worth investing in and too never settle.
