Meet Evan Goodwin | Principal & Architect

We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Goodwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Our firm tries to come to each project without an ego or preconceived notion of how it’s going to develop or turn out in the end. Client participation is crucial in our line of work, because ultimately the clients are the end users of our design work. Designing a home is an intensely personal experience, so we like to say “we draw life” into the dreams of our clients.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an architect by trade, but I’m an artist first and foremost. I joined the architecture firm I’m now a Principal of largely because the firm still put an emphasis on hand drawing in an industry that has moved more and more towards digital drawing and rendering over the decades. I grew in my role at the firm, and professionally in my career, because I was encouraged to continue sketching and drawing by hand as a form of creative expression and communication with our clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Bluffton, South Carolina is a small town but still has so much to offer. Old Town Bluffton, where our architecture firm’s office is located, is the heart of Historic Bluffton and offers a dozen restaurants, multiple art galleries, and plenty of beautiful scenic walks near the iconic May River. After we’ve eaten our fill at FARM, The Bluffton Room, and Mi Tierra, I’d take my friend over one waterway for a few days to check out all the eats, mini golf, and beach spots on Hilton Head Island, and then I’d spend the last few days across the other major waterway to Savannah, Georgia, where bars and foodie spots abound alongside picnics in Forsyth Park, historic ghost tours, and the third largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the US.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve got to give a shoutout to all the educators I’ve been taught by over my years in primary, secondary, and graduate school. Teachers are a special breed of human that deserve way more credit than anybody can give them, and I owe my endless curiosity and love of learning to those teachers who had a positive impact on my life.
