We had the good fortune of connecting with Esther Louis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Esther, what do you attribute your success to?
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m Haitian and Dominican and when my parents came to the states, they wanted to show my sisters and I that if they can make it, so can we! They were very hard working! We saw the good, the bad, the ugly! What my sisters and I are super grateful for, is the love that we saw between them and the love they had for us! We truly had a great example set before our eyes! My parents loved the Lord, loved each other, worked hard and loved us unconditionally. Even through tough discipline, we truly appreciate that now as adults.
Born and raised in NY, my parents moved my sisters and I down south, for them to soon retire. Right before I started college, my mom passed away with breast cancer. This pained, struck our hearts as a family, and transitioned our lives like no other!
While my two older sisters were in grad school in other states, my dad and I were still here in the Spanish Fort/Mobile, AL area.
My dad saddened and in grief about our mother, couldn’t stay in the house they built together, so he moved back to NY. Since I was still in college and didn’t want to lose my credits, I stayed back and finished out here.
Then honestly my career started! I realized that artistry was my passion at 11 years of age when my mom after chemo treatments wanted me to do her makeup. When I finished and saw the light in her eyes, I knew since then, that was my calling. After college, I worked two to three jobs just to be financially stable and comfortable. I truly felt empty inside because I wasn’t in a career that I enjoyed. The one thing I knew was that I had to give a 100% then in what I was doing to be able to elevate in my next phase in life.
I think what may set me apart from others is my humility. I really take my artistry business seriously! It’s hard for me to accept compliments and praise when I’m just still striving to be better in my skill set and knowledge within the industry. Now, I take pride in my work and I know that my skill is strong, however, I really try to strengthen that daily with every chance that I get. Also, I try to ensure that anyone/everyone who comes in contact with me, leaves with a great experience! I want to bring joy to them! I want my clients/future clients to feel great not only on the surface but also internally! If I can be apart of that with the experience and services I provide, then count me in!!! I naturally love people, so if there’s something I can do to offer my help to other artists and ones in the industry, I don’t mind sharing my knowledge of what I know! I want us all to win! I’m a firm believer that no one can take your gift from you! We may know the same things but operate and pour out what we know in different ways! So sharing what I know, will never take away from my gift and ability!!!
I’m most proud of the fact that I never gave up. All my hard work prior to and now aren’t in vain! I see it just unraveling before my eyes and even when I get weary, the Lord kindly reminds me that his hand is still over my life!
Through the hardships I’ve experienced in life, at 31, you just couldn’t have told me I would be here. I’ve experienced and still am experiencing pain/sorrow from the passing of my parents. I would’ve loved for them to see where I’m at in life now! I just know their hard work that they’ve instilled in my sisters and I, is something we will forever keep in our hearts and passed down to our kids and generation! Through it all, this has taught me for sure to keep going & and that my purpose/gift is still needed.
I find myself in a place called “beauty for ashes”. It all dials back to what I stand for: prayer, consistency and faith !
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My sisters,(Christina &Christine) who challenge me to keep going as well! They show me so much love as their younger sister and remind me daily, who I am in Christ. They also remind me not to forget what our late parents instilled in me (us).
My tribe: Khristian, Pae, Sarah, Maya, Judy, Tomorrow, Santina, Joannah, Annie, Taylor,
Marshall, Brenda, Brianca, De-dee etc.
I’m thoroughly thankful for the tribe I have in my life!!!!! The mentor in my life who saw me, as some like to call it, the “spritzer girl” (fragrance area) in the department store I was working at, has also been very present in my life.
She’s actually like family to me now & one of the closest to me.
She saw greater in me before I saw it in myself. Judy Williams, thank you for sharing your thoughts, professionalism, love, encouragement, skills and knowledge to me! You are one of the great reasons why I am “Esther Louis Artistry”. You poured into me, my business like never before and I’ll always be eternally grateful for you! Thank you!
