We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin McDevitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
If I am being really honest, risk taking has played one of the biggest roles in my life for as long as I can remember. I have been a dancer for 20 years now and upon graduating high school, rather than taking a more conventional route, I decided to move to Hollywood to dance professionally. Since then, I have taken every opportunity I can to travel, experience life, and follow my passions no matter how intimidating it may seem at first. I feel that in the years since I have graduated high school, I have lived so many lives and those experiences have really played into what led me to my career now. I like to think of myself as fearless, but I almost think that it is actually a fear of being mediocre that leads me to take risks!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think that what sets me apart from others is my weird-ness . . . mostly I just mean the choice to embrace that I myself, am my brand. Sharing myself authentically with others and getting to connect on a level that means something more to me and my clients than just performing a transaction. I get excited by bodies, and I know that may sound strange at first but, as a personal trainer, I coach based on peoples’ anatomy. Lifting weights isn’t always one size fits all based on different bone structures, ailments or injuries, ages, etc and I think bodies are the coolest. It is so awesome to work with so many different bodies and find out what works the best for them, gets them the best results and keeps them excited to work out. I think the progression into becoming a personal trainer was very natural for me as someone who has been active my whole life and has a passion for teaching but, I continue to learn lessons every day. Of course part of that is continuing education and keeping up with current research and evidence but.. After all, the biggest aspect of “personal training” is the “personal”. Working with people all day gives you lots of perspective, community, and conversation. I learn from my clients every day! I want people to hear that you can find success in doing what makes you happy and makes you feel fulfilled. Don’t be scared to branch out and invest in what lights you up.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooh how difficult this question is to answer because Atlanta is becoming a very cool city with so many fun spots.

I think the beltline is always a must because it connects so many neighborhoods but on a grander scale is a beautiful part of how Atlanta has invested in infrastructure that is green, provides free activity and also creates so much community among the city.

I’d have to start the day at any my favorite coffee shops; Chrome Yellow, Kinship, East Pole, Gilly Brew Bar (the list goes on).

Followed by some sort of outdoor activity or city activity like; perusing the Beltline, spending time in Piedmont Park or Grant Park, hiking Stone Mountain, East Palisades or Sweetwater Creek, the aquarium, visiting a neighborhood like EAV, VAHI, Inman Park or the West End.. I try to avoid the really busy spots like PCM or Krog.

The day would end with dinner or drinks at any of my favorite spots; Fudo, Barcelona, Del Bar, Grindhouse, La Semilla, Ladybird, Mambo Zombi, Little Trouble, and then playing pool or bopping down the beltline for stops at bars or other fun!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my boyfriend, Collin. One of the reasons Collin loves me so much is because I choose to do what lights me up and is authentic to me no matter what. He always supports my dreams and decisions no matter how big or small. He’s been my 100% supporter and cheerleader in the almost 4 years we have been together. Living a life of adventure and teaching me to have fun and relinquish control sometimes, Collin continues to make me a better human and to love myself fully.
