Meet Erik Refvik

We had the good fortune of connecting with Erik Refvik and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erik, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would have to say that authenticity is the most important factor behind our success and the building of our brand. In the fitness industry people are looking for a place that makes them feel safe and comfortable, and in order to achieve this, they need to believe in you and have trust that they truly matter. Here at TheEdge we take pride in building personal relationships, establishing trust which overall makes the community very cohesive. Our motto is safety, fun, fitness!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My introduction to fitness started at age 12 when my mother pushed me in sports and I found lacrosse. This was considered a late start since all the other kids had been playing lacrosse since grade school. I have always been a competitive person and I wanted to prove myself. I spent every moment I could practicing this sport. My coach and mentor, Joe Mahoney, asked me why I was working so hard. I told him that I wanted to be an All-American. With great compassion and seriousness he told me that I would have to work harder than any other kid on and off the field. I took this to heart and with great focus I worked my tail off. I learned that I was becoming a motivator for many younger kids coming up. My senior year, the hard work was noticed and I was awarded All-American, along with college scholarships to different schools to play lacrosse. It was in college that I found my passion for exercise. I learned that fitness isn’t just about lifting weights. It’s developing mental fortitude, which translates into every aspect of your life. It includes nutrition, stretching, functional lifting, and cardio.
After college I worked at different facilities doing rehabilitation and fitness that I didn’t always agree with. Many of the locations were more focused on the dollar than the needs of the athletes/ clients coming into the facility. I believe that each person should be engaged, no matter the exercise, to ensure proper form and function. I knew that if I didn’t get out on my own I would have to be micro managed, which certainly didn’t work for me. It is very important to me to be authentic and truthful, and I am proud of the culture we have created at The Edge. Your Journey Starts Here is our slogan and what we hold true to. Everybody starts somewhere, and we want to make sure that you start or you build on a firm foundation. We are firm believers in “teach, see and correct.” There can be much disfunction and improper form when it comes to lifting, and honestly it happens with a lot of people. We take special consideration in every athlete’s needs, especially those who are new to functional fitness. Functional fitness, what is that? Basically we have incorporated exercises that mimic every day movements into our daily workouts. We focus these workouts so each person can function well each day outside of the gym. We provide specially created workout each day that not only work on flexibility, mobility, strength, but also focus on building muscle and burning fat.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, my wife and I love to sit by the pool and drink margaritas! Ha! But when we do venture out, we love going to eat in downtown Roswell. There’s a little place called Roux that has happy hour oysters on Sundays. The Alpharetta Square is a great place when there’s a crowd. You can be on a rooftop or dancing in a speakeasy, or just having pizza on the lawn. We also love finding new hiking spots, and there are a surprising amount of waterfalls around Georgia. Blue Ridge is awesome for kayaking!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This shout out is to all the members that make TheEdge Fitness such a wonderful community. Our awesome members make this gym what it is. We have such a wonderful and diverse community and getting the opportunity to work with them each day is a blessing. I also want to thank all of our coaches; without their hard work and dedication we wouldn’t exist! And, finally I have to thank my beautiful wife, she works so hard behind the scenes and helps with all aspects of the business. I love you honey.
