We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica “Ricki” Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erica “Ricki”, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
One conventional piece of advice that I disagree with is that artists should veer away from politics. Music and the arts have always been a platform for unheard voices to speak their truths, and it is important to talk about the things you believe in. It may be a risk to stand firm in your beliefs, but the integrity that comes from that ability to stick besides your moral code will help you build a more connected and loyal community around you and your art.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Since our last feature on this blog, we have been able to further our mission of supporting independent artists tenfold and I am beyond proud of how far we have come to reach our mission. The Sharp Pitch, our artist development and digital marketing agency, has recently been selected to travel to South Korea to present our model at a start-up conference and I am excited to see how the venture into the new market will allow us to reach even more artists and organizations looking to make a difference.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
DBS Sounds is one of my favorite record stores in the world. If you’re in ATL and interested in music, I highly recommend checking it out!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank Lacy, Frances, and Lara for always believing in me and supporting me through both my business’ trials and celebrations.

Special shout-out to those who are dedicated to making positive change within their communities and the world; seeing how bravely people fight for what they believe in makes me more empowered to build a business that will create more opportunities for marginalized voices in the music industry!
