We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erica, how do you think about risk?
I’ll be completely honest, risk makes me nervous and uncomfortable. When it comes to potentially taking a risk I often think about what could go wrong instead of what could go right. But the times that I have taken a risk, it paid off tremendously, so I am absolutely trying to shift my perspective around risk taking.

My freelance writing career was actually started because of a risk. Back in 2019, I was listening to a podcast that Necole Kane was a part of. They were discussing the importance of checking your energy as it related to women meeting men. She talked about how she realized that she wasn’t giving off the energy that conveyed that she was open to meeting a man and that she often appeared closed off and rarely made eye contact. She challenged the listeners to a 7 day challenge where women would make eye contact with men, smile, and say hi. Even though it was completely out of my comfort zone, I decided to participate in the challenge. After Day 1, I posted a funny video on my IG story and tagged xoNecole. My video was reposted and then someone from the team reached out and asked if I would be willing to journal about my experience. They stated that they would have someone from their team of writers write a story about my experience once it was complete. I agreed to journal the experience but at the end of the challenge instead of having one of their writers tell my story, I decided to tell my own story. I went ahead and wrote the article and submitted it to them. They loved it and published it. Shortly after they announced that they were looking for freelance writers so I reached out and I became a regular freelance writer from them.

Taking a risk also paid off tremendously in my personal life too. Prior to Nov 2019, I had been living in the Raleigh-Durham area in NC since I was 18 years old. I desperately needed a change but was scared to move anywhere else. I had fallen in love with Charlotte after frequently traveling here for work. Every time I came, I would think that I would love to live here and finally one day I thought to myself, “well why can’t you?” So I moved. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I love it here! I purchased a home here last year and now have a tribe of the most amazing women that I know will be in my life forever.

So now whenever I start to get nervous about taking a risk I definitely reflect on those times to help me step out of my comfort zone and trust that things will work out for the best.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a writer. It sounds cliche but I’ve loved to write ever since I was a little girl.

I think what sets me apart from others when it comes to my writing is my transparency. I am not afraid to say that I am struggling or sad or want to quit. I think that vulnerability really resonates with people.

My freelance writing career was started by taking a risk which naturally does not come easy for me. I’ve had my writing rejected before and it most certainly did not feel good and made it even harder to put myself out there again but I reminded myself that while no one likes to have their art rejected it won’t kill me. Rejection is part of the process and what is for me most certainly will not pass me by.

I want people to know that I write from the heart. I’m not afraid to be vulnerable, especially on my personal blog. I also love all things women. I truly believe we are God’s greatest creation so a lot of the things I write are with women in mind.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to Optimist Hall here in Charlotte. It’s a huge food hall with a variety of different restaurants to choose from. It’s great for groups because everyone gets to eat whatever they personally have a taste for but we can still eat together. I would also hit up one of the many rooftops bars uptown Charlotte. Those are always a vibe. Actually uptown is a whole vibe and we could probably spend the entire week there. There are so many hotels, bars, restaurants, shops, sports arenas, and museums uptown. There are so many things to do! There is literally something for everyone.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my friend Melissa Chanel. Last year, she gave me the opportunity to freelance write for her blog Kicks and Fros. Every month I get to write about something that I love: women and sneakers. I get to do what I love alongside my friend. It doesn’t get much better than that.
