We had the good fortune of connecting with Eneh Mercy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eneh, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

As a young woman who has seen many women live beneath their potential, she imagined how empowered more women would feel if they had additional skills that brought them significant financial returns.
Getting into the digital space was quite daunting for Eneh. The stereotypical view of women participants in the Nigerian tech scene was far from encouraging but she navigated these challenges by seeking guidance from mentors. She was also able to grow a core support team of 7 individuals who have contributed to building TEFEM over the years.
The Female Media Network (TEFEM) is a registered non-governmental organization (NGO), which is aimed at improving the standard of living of women within the working class age bracket by empowering them with media-related and digital skills. Tefem impacts ladies in society by equipping them to take advantage of the opportunities available in technology and digital media and ensuring they stand out wherever they find themselves by remaining valuable and influential in society.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
It was founded on the 3rd of October 2018 by Eneh Mercy, A brand Identity and User interface designer.
Eneh Mercy’s journey started out while in her third year at the university. She had picked up a flair for photography and graphic design, but little did she know that these skills would be a turning point for her and eventually become her source of income throughout her undergraduate days.

As a young woman who has seen many women live beneath their potential, she imagined how empowered more women would feel if they had additional skills that brought them significant financial returns.

In 2018, TEFEM took on her first project to train 150 ladies at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. Due to some challenges, only 30 ladies emerged, 15 in graphic design, 6 in photography, and 9 in content creation.
By the second and third editions, TEFEM successfully empowered 94 and 150 ladies respectively. Our impact has continued to grow exponentially over the years, having run six empowerment sessions in the past three years across four states (Imo, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Rivers) in Nigeria and empowering over 1,900 ladies, with over 50% of them currently connected to platforms and opportunities where their skills are being monetized. In order to transition to a greater vision, we launched an initiative called DigiAfrica in 2022.
