We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Soller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have had creative passions my entire life and the influence of nature in art, interior design and architecture has been of interest to me for as long as I can remember. For years, I expressed my creativity through sourcing and curating collections of antiques, one of a kind pieces of art and various unique objects from around the world. Word
got out to friends and family, so I began sourcing and curating various collections for them as well. It was around that time, I realized that I wanted to actually create something tangible of my own, something artistic and special. I knew for sure it would be influenced by nature, as that was always a constant source of inspiration for me. Incorporating natural elements into the home with plants, botanicals or florals can breathe so much life into it and to me, that is important. I have a keen attention to detail and the ability to create visual interest from something of simplicity. I also learned years ago that these natural elements, which I now create with, can be preserved to retain the appearance of being ‘alive’ without any future maintenance required. To me, that was pure genius! Having a real plant, botanical or floral piece that does not require watering, re-potting or even discarding was a concept that really resonated with me. The creative ideas started flowing at that point and I knew then that I had found my niche. I have been passionately creating my pieces and evolving my aesthetic ever since!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I create is not something you see everyday. In fact, a lot of people I find have never even heard of preserved greenery/florals. It tends to confuse people at first, they are stunned at the idea that you can have a living botanical in your space for years that requires no maintenance at all. This excites me because I see it as an opportunity to introduce a new concept and explain all of the reasons why I love it. I take this interesting concept from nature a step further when I create art with it, each piece is always different from the next. I almost always customize my creations based on the vessel that I use, whether it be a particular shape or texture that usually determines the natural materials I work with and what the piece will ultimately look like. The process has challenged me to think more outside of the box than I would otherwise, it also has opened up my perception of nature in many ways. There are moments where I experience an interesting mix of energy and frustration while creating and I believe those moments are simply part of the artistic process. I have learned that after years of creating when I push through the challenges — the outcome will almost always be beautiful, unique and meaningful…this is something that truly gives me life!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta really is a wonderfully diverse city with so much to offer, so this one is tough, but I will try to narrow it down! My family and I live in a suburb outside of the city that we think is just lovely and charming, so we would start there…I would take them to Canton Street in downtown Roswell where we would grab brunch at one of my favorite southern spots, either Gracious Plenty or Fellows Cafe. After that, we would take a stroll down Canton Street to explore the art galleries and shops and just enjoy the quaint atmosphere.
I would also highly recommend taking a trip to the Atlanta BeltLine/Eastside Trail — you can ride bikes, walk, grab coffee and even enjoy a treat from King of Pops. There are some really cool murals and street art there as well. It is just a fun experience!
Zoo Atlanta is great for families as well – I have taken my kids there countless times over the years and it’s always a wonderful trip. The Fox Theatre is a magical place too where I have seen many concerts and performances, it’s a great venue for both.
We also have so many great nature trails here in metro Atlanta, my family and I love to particularly go to Riverside Park and the Chattahoochee river with our dog where we walk, ride kayaks or just play in the water.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To start, the name of my business Daisy Jane Designs, is after my mother. Her favorite flower was always the daisy and Jane was her middle name, so the two came together beautifully and quite effortlessly. It has always felt like she gifted that name to me, so it’s important I honor her with the work that I do. Throughout my childhood, she inspired me to work hard and go for what I wanted. When I would pursue something of my own, she was there to encourage and advise if needed. She too was a creative and loved to tap into that when she had the time while raising my sisters and me and having a full-time executive career.
I also have so much support from my family and friends near and far and would not have been able to build this business without them. Their continuous encouragement means the world to me!
I am also very inspired by other artists, particularly those who (like me) maintain a creative business while raising a family. These are people who understand the balance and how to make it all work while nurturing a creative path.
