We had the good fortune of connecting with Ella Griffin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ella, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The first thing that comes to mind is resilience. I have failed so many times that I’ve lost count, but I get up every single time. I never lay there. Had I stopped or laid there and not kept going, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Having true resilience and holding onto that winner’s attitude no matter what it looks like is key!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am where I am today because of every failure. People are often times so afraid to fail, but if you’re not failing..you’re not trying! I got to where I am today from the lessons that I took away from my failures. I didn’t use my failures as excuses or reasons to quit, but I turned those Ls into Lessons.

What sets me apart from others is that my mission and the basis of me becoming an educator within this industry is to be what I didn’t have. It’s so much more about my people than it is the money. So I make sure to go out of my way to personalize every experience that you get with Coco Hair Company.

What I’m most proud about is redefining I-tip Microlinks for Black Women. It changed my life and the lives of so many others. It was so important for me to create a luxury hair care space for Black Women. When I got started, itips for black women were not. In creating that luxury extension space, I know that it has changed lives of many industry professionals. Gone are the days of having to take clients all day just to make ends meet.

It was not easy. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. Here I am having just stumbled on this idea and wanting make it more easily accessible and people are looking at me like I’m crazy. It took a lot of drive and determination because the tools and resources necessary for us to be able to have this service weren’t available. At the beginning when searching for textures to match our kinks and coils – in I-tip form, factory manufactures would tell me “Black Women don’t wear that”. It was not an easy process but I am happy that I stuck with it and I’m truly grateful to have benefited from it and to see others benefit too!

I want the world to know that this is a brand that was created by a little, black girl that was told “No”, “Dont do that” “You should do it this way…” so many times. And I want people to know that I am proof that you can do it. Whatever you put your mind to can be yours.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely going to go to Divan, Its one of my favorite spots. It’s a Persian restaurant rooftop vibes and all. Another one of my favorites is Baltimore Crab & Seafood in the Cascade area. I’m a foodie so I’ll make sure we hit all the best places for food and drinks.

There’s a new rooftop that I have been dying to check out – the L.O.A so we would definitely have to go there. And also a candle making class in in Little 5 points that would be really fun to do.

I also have a trail not too far from my home so we would make sure to take some time to go on a couple walks and just talk. I really love spending time outdoors and taking in surrounding nature. We also cannot forget to spend time manifesting. We would probably go test drive our dream cars and other things like that. I am very heavy on manifestations and the metaphysical aspects of life so we would definitely incorporate that.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely say my 4 sons deserve a shoutout. I’m a single mother of 4 so I raised 4 amazing boys on my own. They inspire and motivate me in so many different ways – I don’t even think they realize it. Anytime I am weary or have any doubts about myself/my business they ALWAYS give me a reason to keep going. They also help me with not settling. In their minds and in their eyes, I deserve the best that the world has to offer and they give me constant reminders of that. So shoutout to my sons for believing in me, encouraging me, and motivating me in so many ways. Love you boys xx
