We had the good fortune of connecting with Ella Dorsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ella, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I wanted to become a meteorologist because weather impacts every single person every day, and we have absolutely no control over it. Obviously the most important part of my job is to prepare people each morning for the weather that day. During tornado outbreaks and severe weather, I have the incredible responsibility of keeping my viewers safe, and potentially saving their lives. But perhaps the more understated part of my job is to help people start their day on a happy note. I try to bring a bright energy and light-heartedness to my forecast that hopefully impacts people in a positive way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I knew I wanted to be a meteorologist when was 4. I was lucky to be unwavering in that decision, going to college specifically for meteorology. What they don’t teach you in college is how hard the broadcast tv industry can be. I started my career working a double shift on the weekend; 4am to midnight both Saturday and Sunday. This business demands a crazy schedule; for the last 3 years, my alarm has gone off at 2:20am. There’s a lot of personal sacrifice that comes with these hours, but I’ve never questioned that this career is the right one for me. I love the science of weather prediction, and I love communicating that science to our viewers. I love connecting with people all over Metro Atlanta through the TV screen.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The beltline, duh! The beltline is the best addition to Atlanta in the last decade. I love starting with lunch at Buena Vida, working my way to Bazati and eventually Inman Park or Krog Street. Another great full-day experience is the Battery and a Braves Game.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today without my mom. She is an incredible role model, and a huge source of inspiration for me. She is an award-winning journalist that has had a long and successful career. But beyond that, she is my #1 fan and biggest supporter. I’ve watched her go through extreme loss but continue to live life passionately with an infectious positivity. I am so lucky to call her my mom!
