We had the good fortune of connecting with Electra Frederick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Electra, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My artist community, Respect The Artists, is here to exude exactly that – Respect. As respect is also love, the purpose is to raise awareness to the high value that comes with the gifts and talents of being a visual artist. Generally, people have such mixed notions of what being an artist is about and they miss the mark of importance in self-expression. Simply put, when someone stands up and says that they are an artist: they should receive a respectful response.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe there are a couple of things that set an artist apart. The first thing is knowing who you are. Although I can go much deeper with this, it really has to do with standing up for what you believe in and walking tall in your purpose. The second thing is having a clear understanding of your idea of success and taking action doing – exactly – that. My art is a combination of visual and performance art. Visually, I create art for my enjoyment and through videography. Performance wise, I embrace a stage, platform, and ability to highlight artists like it was late and breaking news. Haha! Not everyone is doing that, however I didn’t start it for trending purposes. I did what I was called to do. If anyone wants to achieve anything, they are going to have to go through a process. There will be challenges, you will be uncomfortable, you will make others that are used to you uncomfortable, also, and those trials vary from person to person. For me, God told me to let go of immediate gratification. It was something I sought for years and learned a great deal of lessons to realize that’s not what life is about. There’s no greater feeling than having people learn about new artists simply because I spoke about them. It’s an honor. I love to have a platform where I give credit, respect, and love to artists of all backgrounds and walks of life. Why? Because they deserve it. The mere fact that they are deciding to explore self-expression in their own way regardless of status quo, antiquated ideas of what being an artist is, or any negative feedback they’ve ever received. It’s bravery and I’m blessed to talk about what makes them outstanding, and that’s being who they truly are. Respect The Artists (RTA) is an artist community that unconditionally supports visual artists, creatives, and designers. It’s a judgement free space where artists have group conversations, learn from forums, livestreams, and have fun. Uplifting and encouraging each other is imperative in our community. I count the blessings to have such a positive and flourishing community.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
All my friends know that I love art. Naturally, the first place we would go is the Virginia Museum of Fine Art (VMFA). They have incredible dining there, also. I love to shop so next on the list would be Stony Point Fashion Park and also Short Pump Town Center. We would partake in numerous activities for the week and close out in style with a spa visit.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank my family and friends and truly show gratitude to my visual artists around the world who bravely stand in their passion.
