We had the good fortune of connecting with EHUNG and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi EHUNG, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe life is about risk and choosing to dive into the unknown. Who am I and what would I have become if I never picked up a random tool to paint with and if I never chose to express the most inner parts of me onto a canvas? Being colorblind is a risk in itself. I never know what the blend on my canvas is until I ask a friend. The risk of using objects not known to a canvas to develop a piece is all about risk. How can i paint with a edge of dust pan, if I use this pine cone what shape will it produce? If I’m angry and use a knife as my instrument will you be able to tell what I was feeling and what I use to create this piece? That in itself is my risk.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a colorblind abstract artist. I don’t use brushes to paint with. I use random objects such as pine needles, edge of a dustpan, windshield wipers and even as crazy as an electric guitar. I don’t live in a conventional state of mind which isn’t bad. I just choose to go against the grain. I’ve always been considered a rebel. I wanted to open the flood gates and the technicality of being different. Even when I was younger my unique eye for creativity was always pushing the boundary wider and further. I wanted to be free, to be me with no limits and I’m trying to achieve that goal every day.
It hasn’t been easy especially being colorblind. It has been a challenge and I love pushing myself to strive for success. But I literally paint from emotions and passion. It’s a gift I was given to be able to paint beautiful pieces with such bold and elaborate colors.
One main lesson is to Never Give Up! I’m a fighter ever since birth. I fight every day, to challenge my skills with new objects, to challenge my mind with new concepts. Had I not attended my very first art show and listened to my mom, best friend and myself then I wouldn’t be where I’m at now.
I’m proud of myself for never giving up, for never listening to a lot of people saying I would never get anywhere with my hobby. There are times when I was so frustrated with colors not working or it looking like a mess that I would attack the canvas so hard there would be a hole in it. But what did I do? I take a deep breathe and start over until I make sure the colors looked right to me. I would ask my friends or family for assurance if the colors work together. I would keep pushing once it was done.
I’m excited for how far I came. I’m excited for all the new tools I have used. I have even been blindfolded while I paint with my crazy tools.
My recent excited news that I have is that I’m doing my second solo exhibition on the weekend of August 27, 2021. It’s called Dangerous Objects. I will be in dangerous situations or painting with dangerous objects while being blinded for some. The craziest object I will be using is a chainsaw! I will also be hosting Sex Party: An Erotic Art Show with Rastagraphy. The Erotic art show will be held on 8/27 that evening with a soft opening for my Solo. The main opening of my Solo exhibition will be on 8/28. I will have private tours during the day throughout the weekend! So stay tuned for the flyers for both shows with more info on my IG: @ehung21

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes. It starts with my Mom, Gladys. She herself is a phenomenal artist. She told me one day, when I’m stressed to take it out on the canvas.
Secondly would be my best friend Kevin Vaughn-Daniel. He lived with me when I started painting. He not only motivated yet pushed me to be the greatest I can be in life and in my artistry. He knows me the best especially when it comes to my art.
Third would be Rastagraphy. He has been my mentor in the art world. He got me into my first art show, solo exhibition and now curating themed art shows. We came up with an erotic art show last year and it’s been a huge success!
