Meet Edward Varnie | Screenwriter & Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Edward Varnie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Edward, what are you inspired by?
The unapologetic authenticity of my friends, collaborators, and loved ones serves as my prime source of inspiration. Seeing them embrace their true selves without fear or hesitation is not only commendable but deeply empowering to me. It reminds me that it’s okay to be yourself and pursue what you’re truly passionate about. Which has been a internal struggle that I’ve grappled with as a creative.
In a world where conformity often takes precedence, witnessing genuine and authentic individuals is refreshing and invigorating. My friends and collaborators ability to defy societal norms and expectations encourages me to grow and to create fearlessly. Their courage and authenticity act as a constant reminder that staying true to oneself is essential for personal and creative growth.
Furthermore, being in the company of authentic friends and loved ones allows for to be free to create on level that fosters deep connections and meaningful relationships with my creative partners.
Which serves as a reminder to me of the importance of staying true to yourself and embracing your passions despite societal challenges. Their influence encourages me to break free from conformity, nurture my creative spirit, and build meaningful relationships based on authenticity and mutual support.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an artist, my drive to tell original and authentic stories that highlight the human experience through the Working class African diaspora sets me apart from other storytellers. What excites me the most about this approach is the opportunity to challenge the audience’s expectations and preconceived notions of what they expect from me as a storyteller.
By delving into the intricacies of the African diaspora, specifically the experiences of the working class, I aim to shed light on the diverse perspectives, struggles, and triumphs that often go unnoticed or misrepresented. Through my work, I strive to give a voice to the untold stories and celebrate the resilience, strength, and beauty within these communities.
Telling stories that challenge societal norms and break away from stereotypes is not only a personal commitment but also a responsibility I hold dear. It is through these narratives that we can foster deeper understanding, empathy, and unity among people from all walks of life. By breaking down barriers and showcasing the shared humanity we all possess, I aspire to inspire meaningful conversations and promote positive change.
I am truly passionate about this journey as a storyteller, as it allows me to celebrate diversity, ignite curiosity, and create conversations for underrepresented voices to be heard. I am dedicated to continuously pushing boundaries, exploring new original narratives, and crafting compelling tales that resonate with audiences on a profound level.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way in my journey as a filmmaker have shown me that resilience, discipline, and community are truly invaluable. These qualities separate those who simply dabble in filmmaking as a hobby from those who wholeheartedly embrace it as their passion.
Resilience has taught me to weather the storms of setbacks and challenges that inevitably come with pursuing a career in the film industry. It’s about bouncing back from rejection, persevering through difficult times, and finding the inner strength to keep pushing forward. Through resilience, I’ve learned to view failures as stepping stones towards growth and improvement.
Discipline has been crucial in shaping my character and professional growth. It’s about maintaining a consistent work ethic, setting goals, and staying focused on my craft. Discipline has allowed me to overcome distractions, stay organized, and make the most of my time and resources. It’s the daily commitment to honing my skills, whether through writing, studying, or producing, that has truly propelled my journey forward.
However, one cannot underestimate the power of community. Surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who share the same passion for filmmaking has been a game-changer. Building a network of fellow filmmakers, mentors, and collaborators has provided me with endless support, advice, and opportunities. The film industry thrives on collaboration, and being part of a community that encourages creativity, offers constructive criticism, and opens doors for one another is immeasurable.
In summary, resilience, discipline, and community are not just qualities, but rather intangible assets that have enriched my journey as a filmmaker. These lessons have taught me that pursuing filmmaking as a passion requires unwavering dedication, a strong work ethic, and the support of a nurturing community. Together, they have allowed me to harness my creativity, tell unique stories, and steadily progress towards my goals in the ever-evolving landscape of the film industry.
I want people to know that my brand is all about telling stories that challenge the audience’s consciousness. I push myself to step out of my comfort zone and explore conversations and topics that are often ignored or overlooked. Being unapologetically authentic in who I am and the risks I am willing to take is what defines my brand as a storyteller.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My idea of a great time is cozying up in bed watching movies, engaging in intimate conversations about wealth and power. When I’m in the mood to entertain and treat my friends, I would take them to Pit Boss BBQ for some delicious food, allowing ourselves a break from our diets. For a fun socializing experience, we could try axe throwing at Bury the Hatchet. To relax and focus on self-care, Jeju Sauna would be the ideal spot to decompress. And when we want to escape the chaos of the city, we could venture to the tranquil Blue Ridge Mountains, where we can simply enjoy the serenity of nature
