We had the good fortune of connecting with Edward Chiang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Edward, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
What I have learned in the past 3 years is that in the career services industry, the intellectual property for any organization or business comes from its clients. You see, our success comes from our clients willingness to be vulnerable, honest, and courageous. When they commit to this mindset, then they would be empowered to pursue and reach their career aspirations.

What should our readers know about your business?
My Career Assist is a career planning business. We facilitate the relationship between organizations and their employees to maximize output and employee satisfaction. Our goal is to integrate career development of professionals into the talent strategy for organizations. What sets us a part from other career services businesses is that we build career strategies for professionals and focus career growth on acquisition of professional skills and development of capabilities. We encourage professionals to stay with the companies they love and build out effective strategies to grow their careers. This has positive outcomes for the employees as well as their employers (reduce turnover).
I left a 20-year career in the manufacturing and supply chain industry and pivoted to career services and HR because I have met so many people who struggle to find fulfillment with their careers. Many of these individuals feel that they have little support for their career ambitions and often stay in roles for years and only take on new jobs when they are forced to leave. I believe there are clearly better outcomes for individuals as well as for organizations.
My journey has just begun; and the sacrifices that my family and I have made are significant. We know that this journey is long but believe that we will be successful because we have tremendous support of our friends and our networks. The most important lesson that I have learned so far is that personal relationships are crucial in our lives. We are building relationships every time we interact with people in and out of work; and these relationships serves us in positive ways throughout our lives. Our career planning framework also teaches importance of relationships throughout our careers.
I want to empower and encourage all individuals to set ambitious goals and work to reach them. Most of us have modest goals in our lives and careers and I want to remind everyone that they all have what it takes to succeed; and with a bit of help from their supporters and loved one, they will reach (and likely surpass) their goals. The great thing about this fact is that once you achieve your first goal, you build confidence to pursue other goals in your life and career. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many groups of people who have contributed to My Career Assist. My teams from Medtronic and Accuray; my business school classmates (The Wharton School, WEMBA 35E), my close friends, and my family. These wonderful people have given me motivation, support, encouragement, and inspiration to make significant sacrifices to try and make my vision a reality.
