We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Karim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ebony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business was a way to break free from feeling marginalized in traditional workspaces, allowing me to create a space where I have full autonomy over my work and decisions. This pursuit of autonomy aligns with the broader struggle for empowerment within a society that may not always value or recognize the contributions of Black women.

Entrepreneurship can be a means to achieve economic independence and create wealth within a system that historically has excluded or disadvantaged Black individuals. By starting my own business, I can begin to seek to build generational wealth and create opportunities for myself and others within my community.

The lack of representation of Black women in leadership positions and entrepreneurship has motivated me to challenge these norms. I am not only creating opportunities for myself but also serving as a role model for other Black women and girls, challenging stereotypes and inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the Founder & CEO behind Embarkus Solutions, an IT boutique consulting firm specializing in providing client support in the areas of program and project management, contract management and acquisition and The Beauty Genie™, a haircare vending machine brand focused on providing beauty and haircare products and accessories for those with textured and curly hair. Some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way are: Resilience: I’ve had to develop a thick skin and persevere in the face of discrimination, biases, and obstacles that may not be as prevalent for others in similar positions. Self-advocacy: I’ve learned the importance of speaking up for myself and advocating for my ideas, contributions, and worth in spaces where my voice may be marginalized or overlooked.
Authenticity: Embracing my identity as a Black woman has been crucial in gaining respect and credibility as a leader. Being true to myself and my experiences has allowed me to connect with others on a deeper level and foster genuine relationships.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For the ultimate time in Chicago, I would definitely suggest a stop at Buckingham Fountain (depending on the weather), Navy Pier (during Boat Week) as well as the Shedd Aquarium and Field Museums. For the best Chicago-style hotdogs, hit up SuperDawg; Soul food- a definite must is Luella’s Southern Kitchen, for Chicago Pizza- Thin Crust, Italian Fiesta or Pat’s Pizza for Deep-Dish: Giordano’s or Lou Malnati’s.. For a great speakeasy experience, check out LazyBird or The Bind Barber.
